Overview
At Honjin Hiranoya Bekkan, you’re just one minute from Takayama’s famous old town. Step outside and stroll to the morning market, the historic Takayama Jinya, or along streets lined with traditional wooden houses. Despite the central location, the ryokan remains peaceful—a quiet place to relax after exploring the city.
From the rooms facing the river, you can watch the clear waters of the Miyagawa flow past the iconic red Nakabashi bridge, while the distant Hida Mountains change with the seasons. Whether you’re visiting in spring bloom, summer green, autumn colors, or winter snow, this ryokan offers a warm welcome and classic Japanese hospitality.
Accommodation
Choose from four types of rooms, each offering its own view and atmosphere. Every room features tatami mats or refined Western-style interiors, along with bath, toilet, and thoughtful amenities.
Jinya View Twin: These renovated Western-style rooms face the historic Takayama Jinya and morning market. The rooms feature twin beds, playful décor, and a Japanese ceramic bathtub set in a Western-tiled bathroom.
River View Japanese Room: These rooms overlook the Miyagawa. You can relax as the sound of the river flows past your window. The larger 12-tatami rooms include separate bath and toilet areas for extra comfort.
Town View Japanese Room: Facing Takayama’s charming streets, these rooms connect you directly to the city’s atmosphere. Perfect for a quiet and restful stay close to the heart of town.
River View Twin: Located in a corner with river views, these stylish Western-style rooms include electric reclining beds so you can relax in exactly the right position.
Every room at the ryokan is non-smoking and offers free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a private bath, safe, yukata, and a set of amenities including shampoo, soap, razors, and toothbrushes.
Dining
Your meals at Hiranoya Bekkan are served in private dining rooms that blend tradition with privacy and comfort. Enjoy kaiseki dinners made with care and precision, changing every month to reflect seasonal ingredients and regional flavors.
Each dish highlights the best of Hida’s produce. You’ll taste local vegetables, handmade tofu, and specialties like Hoba miso. From the delicate seasoning to the visual presentation, the meal brings the spirit of Takayama to your table.
If you love Hida beef, you can choose a meal that showcases this regional treasure in several ways—grilled, marinated, simmered, or lightly seared and served as sushi. It’s a full experience of flavor, prepared with technique and passion.
In the morning, select from a Japanese or Western breakfast. Whether you prefer grilled fish and rice or toast and eggs, you’ll start the day feeling nourished and ready to explore.
Onsen and Wellness
Head to the seventh floor for a soak with a view. The public baths include:
- Moonlight Bath: This men’s bath opens to a wood-decked open-air area. During the day, you’ll see the Hida mountains; at night, the stars and Takayama’s lights shimmer around you.
- Kirara Bath: The women’s counterpart features wide windows and a calming atmosphere. In every season, the view outside connects you to nature—cherry blossoms in spring, fresh green trees in summer, brilliant leaves in fall, and snowy landscapes in winter.
For women, there’s also a special retreat:
Relax Kura: This restored traditional storehouse now serves as a private bath and esthetic space for adult women only. Step inside and you’ll find a quiet garden, soft lighting, and natural wood beams overhead. The bath water is gentle, and the space feels like returning to a favorite memory.
After bathing, take a seat in the rest area. Sip herbal tea, gaze at the river, or sit back in a butterfly chair and watch rickshaws cross the red bridge. The ryokan provides clean towels for each bath, so you never need to carry one from your room.
Guests with Tattoos
You are welcome to use the baths. However, please check with the front desk for guidance, especially during peak times or if traveling in a group.
