Overview

Step into timeless elegance at Unzen Kyushu Hotel, an adults-only resort tucked into the volcanic landscape of Unzen National Park. Surrounded by dramatic geothermal scenery and mountain air, this tranquil hideaway blends classic charm with modern comfort. The property stretches across 9,158 m² and includes four thoughtfully designed buildings: an entrance hall, guest rooms, a restaurant, and secluded villas.

You’ll find yourself face to face with the steam and rocky beauty of Hell Valley. The gardens burst with seasonal color, and the architecture pays homage to the hotel’s hundred-year history while embracing a contemporary, relaxed style. This is a place to pause, reconnect, and enjoy peaceful moments together.

Accommodation

Resort-Style Guest Rooms

All 21 rooms in the main building offer semi-open-air hot-spring baths, tatami-style spaces, and a terrace overlooking Hell Valley. Each room includes beds ranging from semi-double to king size, walk-in closets, a wide L-shaped sofa, and over 60 square meters of space. Soft lighting and natural materials like stone and wood create a sense of calm. The layout is clean and functional, ideal for travelers who want resort comfort with a view.

Private Villas – Hanare

Each of the four detached villas offers a spacious and private retreat. Designed for comfort and quiet, these villas include both indoor and outdoor sulfur spring baths, a separate living room and bedroom, and a garden-view terrace. The floor plan is intentionally varied to give you a sense of exploration. Choose between a villa with an expansive terrace or one with more interior room—either way, you’ll enjoy total privacy and calm. Meals are served in a nearby private dining room reserved just for villa guests.

Dining

Main Dining – “1917”

Inside a classic dining room modeled after the hotel’s original architecture, you’ll enjoy a seasonal course meal made with local ingredients. The menu weaves together Western techniques and Japanese inspiration. Local seafood from Tachibana Bay and vegetables from Unzen’s rich soil take center stage. Breakfast offers a choice between Japanese and Western-style sets, served in a peaceful morning setting.

Villa Dining – “grillé”

Villa guests enjoy a heightened dining experience in an intimate private room. These special meals feature upgraded ingredients like top-tier local beef raised in nearby pastures. You’ll dine close to your room, in a quiet, well-appointed space designed for slow conversation and lingering moments. Morning meals are also served here, with the same choice of Western or Japanese sets.

Onsen and Wellness

Unzen Kyushu Hotel invites you to enjoy hot springs on your own time, in your own space. Each room and villa includes its own semi-open-air bath fed by sulfur-rich water. Though the water may be adjusted seasonally for comfort, you’ll still enjoy the unmistakable scent and clouded look of natural volcanic springs. Soak privately without having to change clothes or walk through shared spaces.

There is no public bath on-site. The focus here is on quiet, personal retreat.

Guests with Tattoos

Because all bathing is private, there are no restrictions on tattoos.

Facilities

The entrance blends traditional Japanese woodworking with modern design. Once inside, you’ll be welcomed with tea and a view of the courtyard. Azaleas, maple trees, and dogwoods surround a central water garden, which you’ll pass on the way to your room.

The second-floor café bar, The Mellow Ridge, serves complimentary drinks to hotel guests from midday through evening. Sit on the terrace after a walk or enjoy a quiet cocktail after dinner. On the rooftop, a guest-only lounge offers panoramic views, massage chairs, books, and evening stargazing. Music, curated by jazz pianist Yusuke Hirato, plays softly throughout the hotel.

You’ll also find displays of local crafts and occasional exhibits of work by Kyushu-based artists.

Activities

Explore the dramatic trails around Mt. Fugen or try your hand at Unzen-yaki pottery. Visit the Hell Valley hot springs or stroll through town by bike. After dark, return to the rooftop to gaze at the stars, or sit in the café bar and let the music and conversation linger.
