Overview

Located just two minutes on foot from JR Gero Station, Mutsumikan places you right in the heart of one of Japan’s most celebrated hot spring resorts—Gero Onsen. Often listed among Japan’s top three onsen destinations, Gero Onsen draws travelers with its famously smooth alkaline waters, nicknamed the “water of beauty.” At Mutsumikan, you’ll experience not only this natural luxury but also the charm of a warm, traditional ryokan atmosphere.

Surrounded by the natural beauty of Gifu Prefecture and sitting along the Hida River, this ryokan serves as a perfect base for exploring nearby destinations like Hida Takayama. Whether you’re staying solo or traveling with others, you’ll find kind service, homestyle hospitality, and a deep sense of comfort throughout your visit.

Accommodation

Step into one of Mutsumikan’s 19 Japanese-style rooms and feel instantly welcomed by the aroma of fresh tatami and seasonal flowers arranged by the proprietress. Each room features elegant furnishings and a quiet atmosphere, making it easy to unwind.

Standard Rooms

Choose from rooms with 8 to 12.5 tatami mats. All standard rooms come with a toilet, and some offer larger, more spacious layouts for added comfort.

Superior Rooms

Upgrade to a superior room to enjoy added features like a private bath with onsen water and a bidet-equipped toilet. These rooms combine tradition with convenience, giving you space to relax in private after a soak in the healing waters.

Each room includes basic amenities such as towels, yukata, toothbrushes, and toiletries. You’ll also find a TV, safety box, refrigerator, and hair dryer ready for your use.

Dining

At Mutsumikan, meals showcase the best of traditional Hida cuisine, with seasonal ingredients served in beautifully prepared courses.

Dinner

Enjoy a Japanese kaiseki-style meal made with local specialties such as brown beech mushrooms, konnyaku, and regionally sourced meats like Hida beef and Mino pork. Your dinner is served in the ryokan’s restaurant, allowing you to savor each dish in a peaceful, relaxed setting.

If you’re staying alone, you’ll still receive a full course dinner. Many travelers appreciate this service for the comfort and attention it brings, no matter the size of your party.

Breakfast

Start your morning with a nourishing meal that includes Hida’s signature hooba miso, boiled tofu, grilled fish, hot spring–boiled eggs, fresh salad, and miso soup. Served in the large dining hall, breakfast combines nutrition with local flavors to prepare you for the day ahead.

Dietary Adjustments

If you have a preference for certain meats, you can switch between beef, pork, or chicken. Be sure to note your request at the time of booking. Please note that vegetarian and halal meals are not available.

Onsen and Wellness

Gero Onsen is famous for its silky, alkaline waters with a gentle sulfur aroma. The water’s smooth texture makes it feel like it’s wrapping around your skin, leaving you refreshed long after you leave the bath.

Public Baths

Soak in large communal baths separated by gender, available from check-in until 9 a.m. on the day you check out. Even if you shower afterward, the water’s effects remain on your skin.

Open-Air Baths

Enjoy open-air baths where you can breathe in fresh mountain air while soaking in the healing water. These baths offer a quiet escape where time seems to pause.

Private In-Room Baths

Some rooms include their own onsen baths. If you feel hesitant about using the larger communal baths, you can enjoy a relaxing soak in the privacy of your own room.
