Overview
Suimeikan sits in the heart of Japan, surrounded by the peaceful natural beauty of Gero Onsen—one of the country’s most renowned hot spring areas. This traditional ryokan blends art, nature, and hospitality to give you an unforgettable stay. Stroll through gallery spaces filled with seasonal artworks and traditional Japanese craftsmanship, then unwind in one of the three public baths that celebrate the healing power of hot spring water. Whether you’re visiting for rest, celebration, or inspiration, Suimeikan offers a thoughtful and elegant retreat.
Accommodation
Suimeikan features four wings: the Rinsen, Hisen, and Sansui buildings, plus the exclusive Seiran annex. Each offers a different atmosphere, but all rooms include Japanese touches like tatami, cypress wood, and soft lighting. Choose from Japanese-style rooms, mixed Japanese-Western layouts, or Western rooms with twin or double beds.
Some rooms include open-air baths or indoor hot spring baths for private soaking. In the Seiran annex, you’ll find rooms built in the traditional Sukiya style using bamboo and cypress. These refined spaces include a private outdoor bath and meals served in-room by a dedicated chef. Whether you’re looking for a cozy retreat or a luxury suite, you’ll find comfort that reflects the quiet dignity of Japan’s interior design traditions.
Dining
At Suimeikan, your meals bring together regional ingredients and time-honored preparation. Hida beef, local vegetables, and seasonal mushrooms appear in carefully arranged dishes that showcase the flavors of Gifu. You can enjoy Japanese cuisine served in your room, in traditional dining halls, or in one of several on-site restaurants.
The Tokiwa restaurant serves kaiseki-style Japanese meals that change with the seasons. For something different, try the Baden-Baden restaurant, where French dishes blend local ingredients with European techniques. Or explore Ryuri, where Chinese dishes reflect Cantonese roots with a mild, approachable flavor. At Kita no Ryo, experience rustic Japanese flavors in a relaxed, wood-accented setting.
No matter where you dine, each bite connects you to the land and culture of the Hida region.
Onsen and Wellness
Suimeikan gives you access to Gero Onsen’s famously smooth waters through three distinct public baths:
- Cypress Bath: Located on the 3rd floor of the Rinsen building, this is the largest bath and is built entirely from cypress wood.
- Open-Air Bath: Found on the 1st floor of the Sansui building, this bath lets you soak under the sky with the sound of nature all around.
- Great Panorama Bath: Located on the 9th floor of the Hisen building, this bath offers sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.
You can also book a private bath or relax in the hot stone sauna, which gently warms your body using natural mineral stone. Each bath space is designed to help you unwind, recover, and leave feeling better than when you arrived.
The water is gentle and rich in minerals, historically known for improving circulation, easing joint pain, and leaving skin feeling soft and refreshed.
Guests with Tattoos
Public baths at Suimeikan do not allow individuals with tattoos. However, private baths are available if you prefer a more secluded experience. This option allows you to enjoy the healing waters without restriction or concern.
