Overview

Established in 1830, Kyoto Watazen Ryokan has welcomed travelers in the very heart of Kyoto, an area often called the “navel of Kyoto.” This central location blends history, traditional culture, food culture, and modern subcultures in a way you won’t find anywhere else. Step outside and you’ll find preserved Kyomachiya townhouses, many now transformed into unique shops. Stroll to Nishiki Market or Shinkyogoku and wander through covered arcades lined with pickle sellers, craft boutiques, handmade bag shops, and souvenir stores. Rain or shine, the neighborhood offers an endless parade of colors, aromas, and flavors.

For nearly two centuries, Watazen Ryokan has been part of the city’s rhythm, loved as a meeting place for locals. Today, it is run by a young couple who carry forward the ryokan’s tradition of warm, unobtrusive hospitality. Their goal is simple—to make your Kyoto stay feel as relaxed as being at home, while surrounding you with the culture and charm of Japan’s ancient capital.

Accommodation

  • Watazen Ryokan offers traditional Japanese-style rooms designed for comfort and calm:
  • Japanese-style Room with Shower & Toilet – Around 20㎡, featuring tatami flooring, shoji screens, and low tables for an authentic Kyoto stay.
  • Japanese-style Room with Bath & Toilet – Spacious at 20–22㎡, combining classic Japanese design with a private bath.
  • Every room is fitted with air conditioning, heating, and Wi-Fi, ensuring a comfortable stay in any season.

Dining

Meals at Watazen Ryokan must be booked in advance, ideally five days before arrival. Dinner is served in traditional kaiseki style, highlighting seasonal Kyoto ingredients, or you can choose specialties such as sukiyaki or shabu-shabu made with tender beef. Vegetarian and vegan kaiseki options are available on request. Breakfast follows a Japanese style, with rice, miso soup, grilled fish, and side dishes carefully prepared to start your day well. Vegetarian and vegan breakfasts can also be arranged.

Children’s meals are available in several styles, from petite kaiseki dinners to lighter plates, ensuring the whole family can enjoy the dining experience.

If you have tattoos, you can enjoy the public baths without restriction, or you can opt for rooms with private bathing facilities for complete privacy.
