Shirahama Onsen

Shirahama Onsen is a well-known hot spring area in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, on the coast of the Kii Peninsula. Unlike many mountain spa towns, it has a distinctly seaside character, with hot spring baths, ocean views, and a setting shaped by the Pacific. The combination of steam, salt air, and open water gives the area a mood that feels both restful and quietly dramatic.

The town is easy to explore at a relaxed pace, and its appeal lies as much in the landscape as in the bathing itself. Visitors often come for the contrast between the shoreline and the onsen culture: a day that can include sea breezes, white sand at Shirarahama Beach, and a soak in naturally heated water. It is a place that feels less secluded than some inland hot spring towns, but no less rooted in the rhythms of Japanese travel and rest.
