Overview
You’ll find Bobata Onsen Yahataya tucked into the hills of Fukushima Prefecture, in the historic hot-spring area known as Bobata Onsen.
Yahataya enjoys a long history and a deeply established reputation: it’s widely regarded as one of Japan’s most notable onsen ryokan.
The large property has 145 rooms in total, with both traditional Japanese-style and hybrid Japanese-Western rooms, and a broad range of facilities including multiple baths, open-air baths, restaurants, saunas, a pool, esthetics, and more.
If you seek a full soak in historic Japanese hospitality, comfortable lodging, and hearty meals, Yahataya offers all that.
Accommodation
You can choose from many room types: pure tatami-matted Japanese rooms, Japanese-Western hybrid rooms (with tatami + beds), or Western-style rooms according to your comfort preference.
Rooms come with essentials: a refrigerator, washlet (toilet), toiletries (towels, shampoo/conditioner, soap), bath towels, bathrobes (Japanese-style cotton yukata), and optional amenities like a humidifier.
Dining
Yahataya serves dinner in traditional Japanese style — carefully prepared and beautifully presented. The ryokan uses local ingredients from the surrounding region: mountain produce and seafood from nearby waters, chosen and prepared with care.
If you prefer, breakfast comes as a buffet — giving you both Japanese and Western-style choices.
The atmosphere during meals aims to be peaceful. Dinner often takes place in private or semi-private rooms where you can enjoy your meal quietly and enjoy the view of the garden or the natural surroundings.
If you have dietary restrictions, the ryokan can accommodate you — just let them know when you book.
Onsen and Wellness
The core attraction — the onsen at Yahataya — draws from its own spring sources, including a highly regarded spring named Sakura Gensen, offering naturally heated alkaline hot spring water.
You get access to multiple bathing options: large indoor baths, traditional outdoor (open-air) baths, a dramatic “giant-stone carved” bath, and panoramic open-air baths in their separate annex building with a view of the surrounding hills.
If you prefer more privacy — or travel with family/friends — Yahataya offers reserved private baths.
They also offer sauna options, including a sauna using local radon-containing spring (a rare “radon sauna”), and another sauna with far-infrared “stone sauna” qualities.
For deeper relaxation, they have esthetic (massage and spa) treatments to unwind muscles and soothe the mind.
Guests with tattoos
If you plan to visit and have tattoos, it’s safest to contact Yahataya directly (phone or reservation inquiry) to confirm whether tattoos are permitted in shared baths or sauna areas. If you book a room with a private bath, you are free to use it even if you have tattoos.
Facilities
Yahataya offers lots of conveniences beyond bathing and lodging. Among them:
- Spa / beauty salon / esthetic treatments to help you unwind.
- Indoor pool (likely available seasonally).

- Accessible rooms and facilities for travelers with mobility needs: some rooms, restrooms, and entrance slopes for wheelchair access.
Activities
While the onsen and relaxation are the main draw, Yahataya lets you enjoy more:
- Evening entertainment: at times, there’s a traditional musical performance (e.g. a koto performance) in the lobby/hallway spaces.
- Seasonal exploration of the surrounding natural area — the ryokan lies amid a region rich in mountain-stream rivers, forested hills, and opportunities to soak in hot springs and enjoy nature.
- For some meal plans or special plans, the ryokan may offer unique seasonal dishes or local specialties, drawing on regional ingredients.
- You could also arrange extra services — spa treatments, massages, maybe excursions nearby — depending on your pace and preferences.
