Overview

Stay close to the centre of Takayama at Hida Hanasato no Yu Takayama Ouan, a Japanese-style city hotel that brings the atmosphere of a hot spring inn into an easy and flexible stay. JR Takayama Station is around five minutes away on foot, giving you a convenient starting point for exploring the old town, morning markets, local restaurants, and cultural sights.

Tatami flooring extends throughout the building, while wooden beams, Takayama latticework, and details inspired by Hida architecture create a strong sense of place. After exploring the city, you can return for a rooftop hot spring bath, admire the mountain and city views, and enjoy the complimentary services available throughout your stay.

Accommodation

Every room is non-smoking and combines tatami flooring with beds, allowing you to enjoy a Japanese setting without sleeping directly on a futon. Soft lighting and low furniture create a comfortable place to rest after a day in Takayama.

The Japanese-Western-style rooms offer the most spacious standard layout, with beds placed on tatami and a separate sitting area where you can relax. Depending on the room arrangement, you may find one wide bed or twin beds, with additional futons available when needed. These rooms include a shower booth.

The Japanese Semi-Double room is a compact choice with a wide 160-centimetre bed and a shower booth. The Japanese Twin room includes two low beds arranged directly above the tatami flooring and also has a shower booth.

The Japanese Deluxe Double room features a large 200-centimetre king-size bed, giving you extra space while keeping the same low Japanese-style arrangement. The Japanese Deluxe Twin is the largest room type, with a queen-size bed, a single bed, a sofa area, and a bathtub rather than only a shower booth.

Your room includes complimentary Wi-Fi, a television, refrigerator, kettle, tea set, hairdryer, individual air conditioning, towels, and samue clothing that you can wear around the property. A bathing basket containing your bath towel and face towel is also prepared for visits to the hot spring floor.

Dining

Begin your morning with the Morning Market Buffet, a breakfast inspired by the foods and flavours of Hida Takayama. Around 60 Japanese and Western dishes are served in the first-floor dining room, allowing you to choose a light breakfast or sample several local specialities.

The buffet includes dishes prepared with Hida beef, such as Hida beef tomato rice bowls and Hida beef croquettes. You can also try regional favourites including keichan seasoned chicken, hoba miso grilled on a magnolia leaf, and tsukemono steak made with cooked pickled vegetables. Western breakfast dishes are also available.

The buffet displays information for eight major allergens: wheat, eggs, milk, buckwheat, peanuts, shrimp, crab, and walnuts. Breakfast is normally available from early morning until 10:00, although serving times may change with the season.

Dinner is not served at Takayama Ouan, leaving you free to explore Takayama’s restaurants and evening food scene. Later in the evening, you can return for complimentary Yonaki Soba, a light half-portion of ramen served in the first-floor dining room while supplies last.

Onsen and Wellness

Take the lift to the 13th floor for natural hot spring bathing above the rooftops of Takayama. From the open-air observation baths, you can look across the city towards the Northern Alps during daylight hours. In the evening, the view changes to Takayama’s lights and the night sky.

The shared bathing areas include an open-air bath and an indoor bath. The main indoor tub carries the natural scent of cypress, while a reclining bath lets you stretch out in the warm water. A sauna is also available beside the shared bathing facilities.

The hot spring source is called Hanasato no Yu. The water is classified as a sodium-chloride spring and emerges from the source at 34.1°C, with a recorded flow of 50 litres per minute. The baths use a circulation system. The spring’s recognised bathing indications include muscle and joint discomfort, sensitivity to cold, fatigue recovery, recovery after illness, and certain minor skin conditions.

Three private baths give you a more personal way to enjoy the hot spring. Shidare is an intimate bath designed for two people. Shirayuki is a spacious rock bath with room to stretch out. Azuma Nishiki is made with fragrant cypress and includes wooden headrests that allow you to settle into a reclining position.

You do not need to reserve the private baths. Check the sign at the entrance and enter when it shows that the bath is vacant, then lock the door from inside. Each session is limited to approximately 30 minutes so that everyone has an opportunity to bathe. The private baths do not have washing areas, shampoo, or body soap, so you should wash in your room or the shared bathing area before entering.

The shared and private baths are generally open from 15:00 until 1:00 and again from 5:00 until 10:00.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, you cannot use the shared indoor bath, open-air bath, or sauna, regardless of the size of the tattoo. You can enjoy the hot spring in one of the three private baths on the 13th floor. These baths are available without advance reservations whenever the entrance sign shows that they are vacant.

Facilities

Takayama Ouan includes a first-floor breakfast dining room, a rooftop hot spring floor, an indoor bath, an open-air observation bath, three private baths, a sauna, and a post-bath lounge with large windows overlooking Takayama. The building also has complimentary Wi-Fi, vending machines, a microwave, designated smoking booths, an accessible toilet, and wheelchairs available to borrow. A 24-hour laundry area is located on the 13th floor, with complimentary washing machines and coin-operated dryers. Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Hida-inspired wooden beams and Takayama latticework appear throughout the interior. Tatami flooring covers the shared spaces, allowing you to remove your outdoor shoes and move comfortably around the building in the samue clothing provided in your room.

Activities

Use Takayama Ouan as a base for exploring the old streets of Hida Takayama. You can walk through the preserved Sanmachi district, browse the stalls at the city’s morning markets, visit Takayama Jinya, cross the red Nakabashi Bridge, and stop at local shops, cafés, sake breweries, and restaurants.

Takayama Station also connects you with destinations across the Hida region, making the hotel a practical choice when you plan to combine time in Takayama with day trips or onward rail and bus journeys.

Additional Features

Complimentary coffee is available in the lobby throughout the day. After bathing, you can cool down with an ice pop in the evening or a cold drink in the morning. A bathing basket with towels is prepared in your room, and samue clothing lets you relax comfortably throughout the building. Complimentary Yonaki Soba is served later in the evening while supplies last. Luggage storage is available before check-in and after check-out, helping you explore Takayama without carrying your bags.
