Overview

Begin your Tateyama adventure at Hotel Morinokaze Tateyama, a mountain hot spring hotel close to the western entrance of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Tateyama Station is only a short drive away, placing the Snow Wall, Murodo, Kurobe Dam, and the high peaks of the Northern Japan Alps within easy reach.

After a day above the clouds, return for a soak in Awashino Onsen, seasonal Japanese cuisine, and time in the mountain-facing lounge. The hotel works equally well for an active trip and a slower break, with spacious rooms, private bathing options, indoor family facilities, and views that change with the weather and seasons.

Accommodation

Choose from Western rooms, Japanese rooms, top-floor Executive rooms, and the private Shikisai annex with natural open-air onsen baths.

The 31-square-metre Western Twin gives you two beds and a comfortable sitting area, while the 38-square-metre Western Triple provides more sleeping space without feeling cramped. Traditional Japanese Rooms come in ten and twelve-tatami layouts with a window-side seating area. You can relax on the tatami during the day and sleep on futon bedding at night.

On the top floor, the Executive Twin covers 56 square metres and includes separate sleeping and living areas. The Executive Deluxe combines 65 square metres of Western living space with an eight-tatami room. For the largest main-building option, the Executive Suite adds a thirteen-tatami room to a 95-square-metre suite.

For private natural hot spring bathing, choose one of the eleven Shikisai rooms. Set around a Japanese garden behind a private entrance, these rooms range from 41 to 87 square metres and include either a cypress or ceramic open-air bath. You can soak in Awashino Onsen water while looking across your private garden toward the surrounding mountains.

An accessible room includes wider entrances, sliding doors, handrails, and a bathroom designed to support easier movement. Selected rooms also welcome small dogs and provide a pet enclosure, bowls, toilet sheets, waste bags, and cleaning supplies.

Dining

Dinner celebrates ingredients from Toyama Bay and the mountain areas below the Tateyama Range. Depending on your selected plan, you can enjoy a seasonal Japanese set meal, a creative Japanese dinner, or an upgraded kaiseki course prepared with carefully chosen ingredients.

Seafood from the Sea of Japan meets vegetables, meat, and mountain produce from the surrounding region. The menu changes throughout the year, so the dishes reflect what is at its best during your stay rather than following one fixed selection.

Breakfast is served as a Japanese meal with locally inspired, freshly prepared dishes. Morning service starts earlier during the Alpine Route season, helping you reach Tateyama Station in time for a full day in the mountains.

Dinner and breakfast are served in the restaurant or shared dining venue. Selected Shikisai plans include a separate breakfast arrangement suited to the private annex experience.

Onsen and Wellness

Awashino Onsen is a pH 9.8 alkaline simple sulfur spring known for its smooth, silky feel. The water leaves the skin feeling soft and gives you a warming place to recover after walking, climbing, skiing, or travelling across the Alpine Route.

The spacious shared bathhouse includes a large indoor bath, jacuzzi, reclining bath, box bath, sauna, and an open-air rock bath. Outside, you can watch the mountain scenery shift from fresh spring greenery and autumn colour to snow-covered winter slopes.

From December through mid-April, the shared baths open from 6:30 AM to 9:30 AM and from 3:00 PM to midnight. From mid-April through November, morning bathing begins at 5:30 AM. The evening hours remain the same.

A private reservable bath gives you a more personal place to enjoy the same spring water. You can also choose a Shikisai room with its own natural open-air onsen, allowing you to bathe whenever you prefer without leaving your accommodation.

Guests with Tattoos

You can use the shared baths when every tattoo is completely covered by suitable tattoo-cover seals.

You cannot use the shared indoor bath, open-air bath, jacuzzi, reclining bath, box bath, or sauna when any part of a tattoo remains visible.

Facilities

The mountain-facing lounge gives you a bright place to pause between bathing and sightseeing. Complimentary coffee, tea, and house-made drink syrups are available while you look through the large windows toward the Tateyama landscape. You may even see wild monkeys passing through the grounds.

The shop carries Toyama sweets, regional foods, traditional crafts, and small travel keepsakes. An indoor Kids Land includes a large cypress-wood play structure, giving you an all-weather option when you are staying with children.

Karaoke rooms, banquet halls, meeting rooms, free Wi-Fi, and on-site parking are also available. The largest event spaces can support conferences, celebrations, training sessions, and group meals.

Activities

Use the hotel as your starting point for the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. From Tateyama Station, a series of mountain transport services carries you through Bijodaira and Midagahara to Murodo, Daikanbo, Kurobe Lake, and Kurobe Dam.

During spring, walk between the towering walls of the Tateyama Snow Corridor. At Murodo, you can follow paths around Mikurigaike Pond, look across peaks rising above 3,000 metres, and watch for wild ptarmigans. Summer brings alpine plants and longer walking days, while autumn covers the mountains in bands of red, gold, and green.

Kurobe Dam offers viewing areas above one of Japan’s most dramatic mountain engineering sites. Seasonal sightseeing releases send huge volumes of water into the gorge, sometimes creating a rainbow in the spray.

Closer to the hotel, Shomyo Falls drops 350 metres through a steep valley and is around 20 minutes away by car. You can also explore Bijodaira’s ancient cedar and beech forests, walk through the Midagahara wetlands, or learn about the region at the Tateyama Caldera Sabo Museum.

Local experiences include soba-making with flour from the Awashino area, guided forest therapy walks, and seasonal paragliding above the Tateyama foothills. Winter brings skiing and snow activities at the nearby Tateyama Sanroku slopes.

Additional Features

Check-in begins at 3:00 PM, and check-out is by 10:00 AM. When your stay includes dinner, arrive in time for your selected evening meal period.

Tateyama Station is around seven minutes away by car. A complimentary pickup service is available by arrangement, making it easier to begin the Alpine Route without driving to the station. On-site parking is available without advance booking.

Dog-friendly accommodation accepts small dogs weighing no more than six kilograms, with a limit of two dogs in each designated room. Select the correct room category when booking, as dogs cannot stay in standard accommodation.
