Overview

Tofuya Resort & Spa-Izu is a historic hot spring ryokan in Yoshina Onsen, Izu, set beside the clear Yoshina River. The ryokan traces its roots back more than 400 years and reopened in 2010 as a spacious Japanese resort spread across a 36,000-tsubo estate. You stay among riverside paths, gardens, old buildings, hot spring baths, dining spaces, and quiet places to sit by the water.

Yoshina Onsen is known as one of Izu’s oldest hot springs and has long been connected with the story of Kodakarano-Yu, the “child-blessing hot spring.” Here, you can enjoy a slower stay shaped by history, nature, bathing, seasonal food, and the soft sound of the river moving through the property.

Accommodation

Tofuya Resort & Spa-Izu has 30 rooms, with Japanese-style, Western-style, Japanese-Western, and villa-style layouts. Some rooms sit close to the Yoshina River, while others look toward the greenery, gardens, or hillside scenery. The atmosphere changes by room type, so you can choose a stay that feels simple, spacious, more private, or closer to the river.

The villa suites are detached rooms along the river and include private open-air hot spring baths. You can choose maisonette-style Western rooms or Japanese-Western layouts, both designed for a more private stay with the sound of the water nearby. Other rooms include semi-open-air hot spring baths, giving you the pleasure of bathing in your own room while still feeling connected to the outside air.

You can also choose Japanese-style rooms with tatami and futons, Western-style rooms with beds, or Japanese-Western rooms that combine beds with tatami space. The bath in your room uses hot spring water, so you can enjoy Yoshina Onsen privately without needing to visit the public baths every time. Your room includes Wi-Fi, heating and cooling, a refrigerator, tea items, yukata, towels, and basic bath amenities.

Dining

Dinner is served at Kaiseki Chaya Mizuoto, a riverside dining space created from an Edo-period building. The original pillars and beams remain, and the thatched roof has been restored, giving the meal a strong sense of place. From the dining area and riverside terrace, you can enjoy the sound of the river while you move through each course.

The cuisine follows a Japanese auberge style, with kaiseki dishes that express the season through color, texture, aroma, and temperature. You can enjoy ingredients from Izu and nearby waters, including seasonal seafood, local vegetables, and carefully prepared Japanese dishes served with refined presentation.

Breakfast is available as Japanese or Western style, depending on your plan and availability. The Japanese breakfast focuses on gentle dishes and rice cooked in a traditional style, while the Western breakfast features an American-style morning meal and bread connected to Bakery & Table Tofuya. Both options give you a relaxed start before you walk the grounds, soak again, or head out into Izu.

Onsen and Wellness

Tofuya Resort & Spa-Izu lets you enjoy Yoshina Onsen in several ways. The property has shared indoor baths, two gender-swapping open-air baths, and two reservable private open-air baths. Many room types also include private hot spring baths, so you can enjoy the water at your own pace.

The spring quality is an alkaline simple hot spring. The water has a smooth feel and is known for warmth, moisture, and a gentle texture on the skin. The shared open-air baths include Gyoki-no-Yu and Kajika-no-Yu, both placed close to the natural setting of the property. The indoor baths give you a quieter place to soak when you want a more sheltered bathing experience.

The private open-air baths include Kodakarano-Yu and Tomo-no-Yu. These baths are useful when you want more privacy, and they are reserved by time. Kodakarano-Yu also connects with Yoshina Onsen’s long history as a child-blessing hot spring. The bath setup makes it easy to enjoy several different bathing moods during one stay, from riverside open-air bathing to private soaking.

Mahora Spa adds a deeper wellness experience inside the resort. The spa uses the story, water, and atmosphere of Yoshina as part of its treatment concept, and it has received World Luxury Spa Awards recognition in 2020, 2022, and 2024. Treatments are offered by reservation, so it is best to plan ahead when you want to include spa time in your stay.

Guests with Tattoos

Tofuya Resort & Spa-Izu has shared public baths as well as private bathing options. If you have tattoos, use the reservable private open-air baths or choose a room with its own hot spring bath for a more comfortable and private soak. This gives you a clear way to enjoy Yoshina Onsen without concern.

Facilities

Tofuya Resort & Spa-Izu has Kaiseki Chaya Mizuoto, Mahora Spa, Bakery & Table Tofuya footbath café, Taishokan Hosen lounge, Tofuya Garden, Oman-no-Niwa garden, hot spring baths, private open-air baths, riverside paths, garden terraces, and spaces for banquets or gatherings. During your stay, you can use Taishokan Hosen as a free-drink lounge, with options such as coffee, soft drinks, beer, and wine during lounge hours. Bakery & Table Tofuya has a footbath terrace, bread, sweets, drinks, and lunch items, so you can sit with your feet in the hot spring while enjoying the river and garden setting.

Activities

You can spend much of your stay simply walking the estate. The Yoshina River runs through the grounds, and paths lead you between gardens, bridges, baths, dining spaces, the footbath café, and quiet corners for sitting outside. Tofuya Garden gives you open green space, while Oman-no-Niwa connects the property to the story of Lady Oman and Yoshina Onsen’s child-blessing history.
