Overview
You arrive at Yumoto Komachikan on Yumoto Street in Yugawara, Kanagawa, a small hot spring inn focused on one clear pleasure: free-flowing hot spring water from its own private source. The setting feels simple, quiet, and easy to enjoy, without extra fuss. You come here for the water, the calm pace, and the charm of a compact ryokan in one of Kanagawa’s long-loved onsen towns.
The hot spring source reaches 85°C and flows as a weak alkaline chloride spring. Yugawara Onsen has been known since ancient times, and this stay gives you a direct way to enjoy that history through a small bathhouse where the water quality takes center stage. You complete check-in at the sister ryokan, Yugawara Mizunokaori, then settle into Komachikan for a relaxed stay built around bathing, rest, and simple Japanese comfort.
Accommodation
Yumoto Komachikan has 12 rooms in total, with 11 Japanese-style rooms and 1 Western-style room. The Japanese-style rooms give you the familiar ryokan atmosphere of tatami flooring, a low table, yukata, and a quiet place to unwind after your bath. The Western-style room gives you a simpler bed-based option while keeping the same easy access to the hot spring baths.
The building has four floors and does not have an elevator or barrier-free access, so this ryokan suits you best if stairs are not a concern. The rooms keep things practical and comfortable, with a television, free satellite broadcasting, Wi-Fi in some areas, an electric kettle, tea set, refrigerator, hair dryer, individual air conditioning, washlet toilet, body soap, shampoo, toothbrush set, towels, bath towels, yukata, slippers, and safe. You can also use the whole building for a private group stay by arrangement.
Dining
Yumoto Komachikan is a simple stay, and meals take place at the sister ryokan, Yugawara Mizunokaori, when arranged in advance. Breakfast is served from 8:00 to 9:00, and dinner is served from 18:00 to 22:00. This gives you the freedom to keep your stay room-only or add meals nearby when you want a more complete ryokan experience.
The dining style works well if you want a quiet base with flexibility. You can spend your time soaking in the hot spring, exploring Yugawara, and choosing whether to dine at the sister ryokan or enjoy local restaurants around the hot spring town.
Onsen and Wellness
The onsen is the heart of Yumoto Komachikan. The baths use free-flowing hot spring water from the ryokan’s own private source, with no need to rely on a large, showy bath space. The baths are intentionally compact, so the water can stay fresh as it flows through the tubs. You soak in a bath that focuses on spring quality rather than size.
The hot spring has a pH of 8.4 and is a weak alkaline spring. This water can help remove old surface skin cells while the sodium ions help your skin feel smooth and moisturized after bathing. The spring quality is sodium-calcium chloride and sulfate spring, also known by the older spring classification as a gypsum-salt spring. The water is weak alkaline, hypotonic, and high temperature.
The ryokan has two indoor public hot spring baths, one for men and one for women. Bathing hours are from 15:00 to 24:00 and again from 5:30 to 9:00 in the morning. The hot spring water is associated with relief for neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, frozen shoulder, motor paralysis, bruises, cuts, chronic digestive concerns, fatigue recovery, health promotion, and dry skin.
For the best bathing experience, rinse well before entering the tub, let your body adjust to the heat slowly, keep each soak short, and rest with water afterward. The spring runs hot, so a gentle pace helps you enjoy the water more comfortably.
Guests with Tattoos
Yumoto Komachikan has shared indoor public hot spring baths for men and women. Tattoos should be fully covered before you use the shared baths. If your tattoo cannot be covered, you should not use the shared bathing areas.
Facilities
Yumoto Komachikan keeps the facilities simple and useful. You have access to two indoor public hot spring baths, a banquet hall, vending machines, Wi-Fi in some areas, and a calm ryokan setting suited to a quiet stay. The building is made of reinforced concrete and has four floors, with no elevator and no barrier-free access.
You can choose from colorful yukata during your stay, including textile designs inspired by Takehisa Yumeji, with 12 patterns for women and 2 patterns for men. An SDGs amenity bar lets you take only the items you need, while bath towels, face towels, and toothbrushes are already placed in your room. Parking is available by advance reservation, and when the parking area is full, you can use nearby public paid parking.
Activities
Yugawara gives you a relaxed mix of hot spring culture, nature, and small-town walking. You can stroll around Yumoto Street, visit Manyo Park and Yugawara Soyu, or spend time around the local cafés and shops near the hot spring area. Manyo Park is especially easy to pair with a ryokan stay, with a café, tourist information area, footbath area, and green walking paths.
You can also visit Fudo Falls, a 15-meter waterfall in Yugawara, or explore more of the town’s seasonal scenery at Makuyama Park and the Yugawara Plum Grove. If you prefer a slower day, stay close to the ryokan, enjoy repeated short baths, and let the hot spring shape the rhythm of your stay.
