Overview

At il azzurri, every room faces Suruga Bay and includes a private outdoor bath. From your terrace, you can look towards Sanshirō Island, listen to the waves below, and watch the sun set across the western Izu coast. During the right tidal conditions, you may even see the Tombolo path appear between the mainland and the islands.

The hotel has 46 oceanfront rooms, ranging from spacious twin rooms to a two-bedroom suite. Some outdoor baths use natural Dogashima Onsen water, while others use microbubbles created from water and air. Selected rooms also add a private barrel sauna and cold bath, allowing you to enjoy a complete wellness routine without leaving your terrace.

Drinks play an important part in your stay. During scheduled service hours, you can choose from sparkling wine, red and white wine, draft beer, whisky, homemade limoncello, soft drinks, coffee, tea, and juice. Italian snacks appear during the afternoon, and you can take lounge drinks back to your room.

Accommodation

Every room gives you a direct view of Suruga Bay and a terrace with a private outdoor bath. You also have an indoor bathroom with a bathtub and shower, so you can choose between bathing inside and relaxing outdoors beside the sea.

The Deluxe Ocean View Twin measures 44 square metres and includes a terrace with an outdoor microbubble bath. Two beds and a sofa create a comfortable layout for couples, friends, or families. The microbubble system creates very fine bubbles using water and air, but it does not use natural hot spring water.

The Luxury Ocean View room gives you 60 square metres of indoor space and a larger terrace. Your outdoor bath uses natural Dogashima Onsen water, and two hammocks give you another place to enjoy the sea air and sunset. The open layout includes three beds, with a sofa bed available when required.

The Executive Ocean View Suite sits on the top floor and measures 92 square metres. Two bedrooms give you more privacy when travelling together, while a private open-air hot spring bath looks across the water. Inside, you can relax in a hammock or use the ceiling-mounted projector and high-quality speaker for films and music. A kotatsu is prepared during winter.

For a more complete private wellness experience, choose the Luxury Ocean View Sauna Terrace or Deluxe Ocean View Twin Sauna Terrace. Both categories include a barrel sauna, cold bath, and outdoor hot spring bath on a large wooden terrace. You can move between the sauna, cold water, sea air, and onsen without entering a shared area.

A Dog-Friendly Deluxe Ocean View Twin allows you to stay with up to two small dogs. The room measures 44 square metres and includes an outdoor microbubble bath, terrace, and equipment for your dog. You need to provide the required vaccination or exemption documents before arrival.

Every room includes Wi-Fi, an air purifier, television, electric kettle, refrigerator, original drip coffee, water, skincare products, towels, toiletries, slippers, and separate top-and-bottom nightwear. Most rooms also include a Bose Bluetooth speaker, while the Executive Suite has its own projector and sound system. All rooms are non-smoking.

Bathing garments are available near the lobby when you prefer extra coverage while using your terrace bath.

Dining

You eat dinner and breakfast at Taverna di Mare, an ocean-facing restaurant inspired by the food of the Izu coast. The dining room looks across the sea, allowing you to continue enjoying the Dogashima scenery while you eat.

Dinner follows an Italian buffet style. The kitchen uses seafood delivered by local fishers, vegetables from nearby farms, and ingredients selected for the season. Kuroge wagyu is cooked quickly in a 500°C oven to keep its flavour and juices, while freshly landed seafood may appear in acqua pazza, carpaccio, pasta, or other Italian dishes. Grilled seasonal vegetables, cold seafood plates, salads, warm dishes, and desserts complete the selection.

The menu changes throughout the year. Summer dishes may highlight bonito, Fujisan salmon, eel with seasonal vegetables, fresh fish from Suruga Bay, and fruit grown in Nishi-Izu. Other ingredients appear as local harvests and fishing conditions change.

Breakfast combines Japanese and Western dishes. You can begin with a freshly prepared panini, seafood tomato soup, prosciutto salad, eggs, bread, pancakes, fruit, or yoghurt. Japanese choices may include Shizuoka whitebait, sashimi, grilled dried fish, chawanmushi, miso soup, rice accompaniments, and magocha, a local fisherman-style dish finished with warm broth.

Selected drinks served with dinner form part of the free-flow service. Food allergies should be shared before arrival. Because meals follow a buffet format and use shared preparation areas, complete allergen separation cannot always be provided.

Lounge Tramonto extends the dining experience beyond meal times. During scheduled hours, you can choose drinks including sparkling wine, beer, red and white wine, whisky, limoncello, liqueurs, lemonade, coffee, tea, and juice. Afternoon snacks can include Sicilian arancini, polenta, nuts, dried fruit, Italian biscuits, and chocolate. Menus may change according to availability.

Onsen and Wellness

The shared baths use Dogashima Onsen water classified as a potassium-sodium sulphate spring. This type of water is traditionally associated with relief from fatigue, sensitivity to cold, neuralgia, muscle discomfort, joint stiffness, minor cuts, burns, and some skin conditions.

The hotel has two large bathing areas, Dangai Terrace no Yu and Iisora no Yu. Each one includes indoor and open-air bathing, a barrel sauna, a cold bath, and views towards Suruga Bay. Men and women change bathing areas between the evening and morning, allowing you to experience both settings during an overnight stay.

The shared baths normally open from 3:00 p.m. until midnight and again from 5:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Sauna use ends earlier in the evening. Shampoo, conditioner, body soap, skincare products, hairdryers, brushes, razors, and other bathing items are provided.

Every room also has its own outdoor bath. Selected Luxury, Executive, garden-bath, and Sauna Terrace categories use natural hot spring water. These baths follow a flowing-water system, with heat added to maintain a comfortable temperature. Deluxe rooms with microbubble baths use regular water rather than onsen water.

The Sauna Terrace rooms give you a barrel sauna, cold bath, private hot spring, and outdoor resting space facing the sea. This setup lets you control the temperature, timing, and pace of your sauna routine in complete privacy.

You can also arrange an aromatherapy treatment inside your room. Treatments use blends of natural essential oils and include body and facial options. Advance reservations are required, and some conditions apply to treatment access.

Guests with Tattoos

You can use the shared public hot spring baths if you have tattoos. You can also use your private outdoor room bath and any private sauna included with your room.

Facilities

The sea-facing entrance lobby gives you wide views of Sanshirō Island as soon as you arrive. Lounge Tramonto serves free-flow drinks and afternoon snacks, while the Sunset Terrace includes an outdoor footbath where you can sit with a drink and watch the evening light change across the water.

Taverna di Mare serves the Italian dinner buffet and Japanese-Western breakfast buffet. Every evening, projection mapping transforms the lobby with images inspired by the landscapes and natural features of Nishi-Izu. You can also arrange in-room aromatherapy treatments for a slower afternoon or evening.

Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. You also have access to elevators, vending machines, an amenity counter, a microwave, luggage storage, parking, and an outdoor smoking area. The indoor areas and all rooms remain non-smoking.

A ramp provides access from the entrance, and an elevator connects the main floors. Wheelchairs and bathing chairs are available in limited numbers. The hotel does not have a fully barrier-free room, and there is a step of around ten centimetres at the entrances to the rooms and public baths.

When travelling with a baby or young child, you can request items such as a cot, bed guard, step stool, potty, nappy bin, bottle warmer, baby soap, child-sized toothbrush, towels, and selected nightwear. Availability is limited.

Activities

You can begin your evening in the footbath with a drink, watch the sunset from your terrace, enjoy the nightly projection mapping, or spend time moving between the public onsen and barrel sauna. A private bath or sauna room lets you enjoy the same rhythm without leaving your accommodation.

The Dogashima Tombolo lies around ten minutes away on foot. During low tide, mainly around spring tides from March to September, a natural pathway may appear across the sea towards Sanshirō Island. The timing depends on the tides and weather, but you may also see the phenomenon from your room.

Tensōdō Cave is around five minutes away on foot. The cave formed from volcanic rock and has a circular opening in its ceiling that lets sunlight reach the water below. Sightseeing boats travel through the caves when wind and sea conditions allow.

Norihama Beach lies around ten minutes away on foot and offers a sheltered coastal setting surrounded by rock formations. You can also continue along the western Izu coast to Golden Cape, small fishing communities, beaches, and viewpoints known for sunset scenery.

Seasonal festivals and fireworks take place around Dogashima on selected dates. The main viewing area for local fireworks is only a short walk from the hotel.

Additional Features

Check-in begins at 3:00 p.m., and check-out is by 11:00 a.m. A reservation-required shuttle connects Mishima Station with the hotel, with the journey taking around 90 minutes. You can also travel by bus from Shuzenji or Izukyu-Shimoda and arrange collection from the nearby Dogashima bus stop.

Parking is available at the hotel, including indoor garage spaces. Motorcycles and bicycles can use available parking areas, although indoor space cannot always be guaranteed.

il azzurri suits you when the view matters as much as the room. Every stay gives you an ocean-facing terrace and private outdoor bath, while natural hot springs, barrel saunas, Italian dining, free-flow drinks, and easy access to Dogashima’s coastal landscape let you enjoy western Izu without rushing from place to place.
