Overview
Shimoda-Shirahama Coast Resort gives you a private ocean-view apartment directly by Shirahama Beach in Shimoda. You stay in Room 505 of Izu Shirahama Taiyo Mansion, with the beach in front of you and the sea always close enough to shape the day. This is not a ryokan, but it gives you a coastal stay with a hot spring element: the residence building has a large communal bath where you can enjoy Shimoda hot spring water drawn from the building’s own source.
The stay is simple, open, and independent. You can wake up to the ocean, cook in your own kitchen, walk to the beach, rinse off after the sand, and return for a hot spring bath in the building. With only one room available for booking, the experience feels more like borrowing a private seaside home than checking into a standard hotel.
Accommodation
You stay in a 50-square-meter Japanese-Western style studio apartment with ocean views, a private bathroom, toilet, and a non-smoking layout. The room is designed as one open space, giving you room to sleep, eat, relax, and look out toward the water without feeling boxed in. Free Wi-Fi is available, so you can plan your trip, work lightly, or settle in for a longer stay.
The apartment includes a TV, wireless internet, electric kettle, refrigerator, hair dryer, washlet toilet, towels, bath towels, slippers, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, toothbrush set, and razor. A microwave is also available in part by request, and the room has the practical feel you want from a beachside stay: easy to use, easy to return to, and comfortable after time outdoors.
The space also includes a kitchen, seating area, dining table, washing machine, tea and coffee setup, kitchenware, and outdoor dining space. This makes the apartment a good fit when you want more freedom than a hotel room, especially if you like slow breakfasts, simple dinners, or time on the balcony with the sea in front of you.
Dining
There is no meal service, so you shape your stay around self-catering and local dining. The kitchen gives you what you need for simple meals, with kitchenware, an electric kettle, refrigerator, and dining space inside the apartment. You can keep drinks chilled, prepare breakfast before the beach, or make an easy dinner after a day outside.
For meals out, Shirahama and Shimoda give you access to seafood restaurants, casual dining, cafés, and local spots near the coast and around Izukyu-Shimoda Station. The apartment is about 12 minutes by car from Izukyu-Shimoda Station, so you can head into town for more dining options while still returning to a quieter beachside base.
Onsen and Wellness
The building’s large communal bath is one of the best parts of the stay. Located on the second floor, the bath is reserved for residence users and uses Shimoda hot spring water drawn independently by the mansion. Men’s and women’s bath areas change once a month, and bathing is available from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
The hot spring is connected with benefits such as easing joint pain, sensitivity to cold, and fatigue recovery. After swimming, walking along the shore, or spending the day exploring Shimoda, you can rinse off at the outdoor shower area, return inside, and enjoy the warmth of the bath before settling back into the apartment.
Guests with tattoos
Guests with tattoos are not allowed on the onsen.
Facilities
Shimoda-Shirahama Coast Resort keeps the stay practical and beach-focused. You have the full private apartment with ocean view, kitchen, bathroom, toilet, Wi-Fi, TV, refrigerator, kettle, and washing machine. In the building, you can use the large hot spring bath, paid coin laundry, vending machine, and paid parking when arranged in advance. The building also has outdoor showers, and you should rinse off sand there before returning to the room.
The property does not have resident staff on site, so check-in details are sent after booking. The building and grounds are non-smoking except for the designated outdoor smoking area near the outdoor shower entrance. Beach items such as floats, bodyboards, and beach tools may be available to borrow, but you need to request them in advance and follow the usage rules.
Activities
Your main activity here is the beach. Shirahama Beach is right in front of the property, and Shirahama Ohama Beach is about a 15-minute walk away. You can spend the day swimming, walking the shoreline, watching the sea from the apartment, or heading out to nearby coastal spots such as Kujuppama Beach and the Shimoda Aquarium area.
Shimoda also works well for a flexible Izu trip. You can explore the coastline, visit local beaches, enjoy seafood in town, or use the apartment as a quiet base between sightseeing and hot spring bathing. The rhythm is easy: beach in the morning, town or sightseeing in the afternoon, then a warm bath and a slower evening by the sea.
Additional features
Check-in starts at 2:00 PM, with final check-in by midnight, and check-out is by 10:00 AM. The apartment is about 12 minutes by car from Izukyu-Shimoda Station. Parking is available for the mansion when requested by the day before check-in.
After booking, you need to provide stay information required under Japanese accommodation rules, including names, addresses, occupations, nationalities, and passport details for non-Japanese nationals. Only the people included in the booking may use the apartment, even for short visits, unless arranged in advance.
