Overview

Isoaruki no Yuyado Ushiogumo is a 7-room hot spring ryokan facing Kawazu Beach. You stay just steps from the shore, with the sea, the sound of the waves, and the scent of the coast shaping your time from arrival to departure. The ryokan opened in September 2022 and takes its inspiration from nostalgia, wood warmth, antique details, and the feeling of walking along a familiar beach.

Ushiogumo treats Kawazu Beach like an extension of your stay. You can walk along the sand, look for columnar joints along the shore, borrow beach-walk items from the front desk, and return to your room for a private open-air hot spring bath with the Pacific Ocean in front of you.

Accommodation

You stay in an ocean-facing room with a private open-air hot spring bath and terrace. Every room looks out toward Kawazu Beach, so you can enjoy the sea, sunrise, night sky, and open coastal scenery from your own space. The room baths use free-flowing hot spring water; the water is heated because the source temperature is low, but it is not circulated.

The rooms blend Ryukyu tatami, Japanese-style beds, warm wood, and nostalgic design. You can grind coffee beans with a Zassenhaus coffee mill and enjoy self-roasted coffee in your room, adding a slower, more personal rhythm to your stay.

You can choose from corner rooms and standard ocean-view rooms. The Oshima corner room has a 12-tatami Ryukyu tatami Japanese-style bedroom, an open-air bath facing the Pacific Ocean, a terrace, and a 2-tatami powder room with a hair iron and LED makeup mirror. The Mikura corner room has a similar 12-tatami bedroom, ocean-facing open-air bath, terrace, and a 1.3-tatami powder room. The standard retro-modern rooms include a Japanese-style bedroom, a 6-tatami Ryukyu tatami area, an open-air bath facing the Pacific Ocean, and a terrace.

All rooms are on the second floor, and there is no elevator. The entrance, shared baths, and dining area are on the first floor, so your stay includes stairs. Free Wi-Fi is available.

Dining

Dinner brings together Izu seafood, mountain ingredients, and refined Japanese cuisine. You can enjoy ingredients such as kinmedai, abalone, Ise ebi spiny lobster, local fish from Kawazu Port, and wasabi from the Amagi area. The cuisine balances traditional ryokan dining with polished presentation, so each course feels special without losing its sense of place.

Several dinner courses are available. The Namimakura Kaiseki course includes dishes such as Ise ebi and sazae sashimi, simmered kinmedai, and kinmedai shabu-shabu as the main dish. The Ushio Kaiseki course includes Ise ebi, abalone sashimi, whole simmered kinmedai, and a choice of kinmedai shabu-shabu or domestic beef sirloin cooked on a ceramic plate. The Suiten Kaiseki course adds a second main choice, such as abalone steak with liver sauce or grilled Ise ebi with Américaine sauce. The Kinme-zukushi Kaiseki focuses on kinmedai through six dishes, including temari sushi, soup, sashimi, salt-crust grilled kinmedai, simmered kinmedai, and magocha, a local Izu dish.

Breakfast takes a Western-style approach while still using Izu ingredients. You can choose a grilled main dish such as white fish, scallop, or bacon, along with warm Izu vegetables, seafood gratin, bread, local strawberry or blueberry jam, and coffee blended to match the breakfast.

You dine in a semi-private dining room with table seating. The space is designed to reduce physical strain, so you can settle in comfortably and focus on the meal. Food allergy requests can be discussed in advance, though full allergen removal cannot be guaranteed because cooking tools and tableware are not separated.

Onsen and Wellness

Hot spring bathing is central to your stay at Ushiogumo. Every room has a private open-air bath with free-flowing hot spring water and a view of Kawazu Beach. The water is carefully managed by yumori, hot spring keepers who adjust the temperature and flow so you can enjoy the bath in good condition.

You can also use the shared baths, Shiosai no Yu and Uminari no Yu. Depending on the time of day, these baths operate as shared baths or reservable private baths. Private bath times are arranged after check-in. The shared baths use hot spring water that is heated and diluted, and the baths are drained and cleaned daily.

The spring quality is sodium-chloride spring water. It is said to help with cuts, peripheral circulation concerns, sensitivity to cold, low mood, and dry skin.

For deeper relaxation, you can book esthetic treatments, massage, shiatsu, acupuncture, moxibustion, or beauty acupuncture. Treatments include aromas connected to the area, such as Kawazu-zakura and New Summer Orange, and the techniques are adjusted after consultation based on your condition. Some head, facial, and shoulder treatments can be arranged as in-room service for two people at the same time.

Guests with Tattoos

All rooms include a private open-air hot spring bath, so you can enjoy your own bathing time in a private space. A tattoo policy for the shared baths is not published, so please contact the ryokan in advance for guidance before using Shiosai no Yu or Uminari no Yu.

Facilities

Inside Ushiogumo, you find a compact ryokan filled with warm wood, antique pieces, and handmade details. The lounge has sofas, tables, wood antiques, an old chest, hanging scrolls, and decorations that add to the nostalgic mood. The front desk features kumiko woodwork, an old clock, and a handmade doll created from kimono fabric by a previous proprietress. The garden has a lawn and pine trees, with a view toward Kawazu Beach, and the outdoor smoking space is near the garden.

You are welcomed in the lounge with matcha and sweets on arrival. You can also browse the Ushiogumo Collection, which includes local Izu products, sweets served at the ryokan, breakfast jams, original Yumoribito items, and small original goods. Women can borrow colorful yukata and hanhaba obi free of charge, making it easy to enjoy a walk along the coast in a more traditional style.

Activities

You can spend your time walking along Kawazu Beach, borrowing beach-walk items from the front desk, exploring the coastline, or relaxing with the sea as your backdrop. The loan items include Crocs sandals, hot spring skin lotion, mineral water, a beach sheet, parasol, cushion, selfie stick, crystal ball, coffee stand, and bag. Numbers are limited.

On full-moon nights, you may see the Moon Road, a path of moonlight across the sea. From Ushiogumo, you can view it from the beach and, during certain months, from your room. The view is usually available around the full moon and the three days before and after it, though it cannot be seen from rooms from November through January.

Nearby, you can visit the Kawazu-zakura cherry blossoms, Kawazu Nanadaru waterfalls, Kawazu Bagatelle Park, and iZoo. Kawazu-zakura bloom around February to March, while the Kawazu River area is within walking distance from Kawazu Station.
