Overview

Kona Stay Izunagaoka gives you a fresh way to enjoy one of Izu’s long-loved hot spring towns. Set in the Kona Onsen area of Izu Nagaoka, this renovated ryokan-style stay blends hot spring bathing, comfortable beds, breakfast, cycling, and a casual bonfire bar into one easygoing experience.

This is a good choice when you want the feeling of a ryokan without a formal schedule. You can soak in source-fed hot spring water, sleep in a simple Japanese-Western room, enjoy a Western-style breakfast, rent a bicycle, or sit by the courtyard fire in the evening. The mood feels social, flexible, and relaxed, making it easy to enjoy Izu your own way.

Accommodation

You stay in a room that keeps the feeling of a Japanese ryokan while adding the ease of a hotel. Private rooms place beds inside a Japanese-style space, so you can enjoy the warmth of tatami-inspired design without sleeping on the floor. The Standard rooms offer a comfortable, simple layout, while the Standard Wide rooms give you more open space to spread out. The Superior room was renovated from a larger Japanese room and keeps touches of the original ryokan atmosphere, including details such as carved transoms and Japanese-style wall finishes.

Some private room types include a shower, while others are designed for use with the shared hot spring baths. Dormitory rooms are also available, with wooden bunk beds suited to groups, teams, or more budget-focused stays. You can bring your bicycle into your room, which makes the stay especially convenient if you are exploring Izu by bike.

Your room includes thoughtful details for rest and convenience. Serta beds support a good night’s sleep, while the room setup includes air conditioning, a humidifying air purifier, refrigerator, safe, wall-mounted TV, BALMUDA electric kettle, mugs, hair dryer, towels, samue-style roomwear, toothbrush, hairbrush, razor, cotton swabs, and disposable slippers. The keypad room lock also means you do not need to carry a physical key, which is especially useful when you head out cycling or bathing.

Dining

Instead of a traditional ryokan breakfast, you start the day with a Western-style meal built around homemade New England-style clam chowder made with hard clams and vegetables. The chowder was supervised by a former head chef from Fujiya Hotel, and it is served with freshly baked croissants, fresh salad, ground coffee, and 100% juice.

Kona Stay follows a stay-and-dine-separately style, so you can choose from restaurants around the area rather than committing to a set meal plan inside the hotel. This works well if you want to try local izakaya, Japanese restaurants, tempura, eel, or other nearby dining spots at your own pace. Advance dinner reservations are a good idea, especially on busy days.

You can also use the shared kitchen in the common dining area. Pick up local ingredients, bring back something from a nearby shop, and prepare a simple meal with the IH stove, sink, microwave, refrigerator, electric kettle, and shared kitchen space. In the evening, The Takibi Bar opens by the courtyard fire, where you can enjoy drinks and light snacks while watching the flames.

Onsen and Wellness

You can soak in Kona Onsen, a hot spring with a history connected to Izu Nagaoka’s older bathing culture. The water is an alkaline simple spring with a smooth, slightly soft feel on the skin. It is source-fed, so your bath time feels closely connected to the town’s long hot spring tradition.

The bathing area includes a large bath and a smaller bath, used on a gender-rotation system. Bathing hours are from 12:00 to 24:00 and again from 6:00 to 10:00, giving you time to soak after arrival, before bed, and again in the morning. Bath amenities include shampoo, conditioner, body soap, cleansing products, face wash, lotion, and milky lotion. Please bring the bath towel and face towel from your room when you go to the bath.

Guests with Tattoos

You can use the hot spring baths if your tattoo is covered with foundation tape or a similar covering. This makes the bath easier to enjoy as long as the tattooed area is not visible while bathing.

Facilities

Kona Stay has a simple two-storey layout built around a courtyard, with private rooms and dormitory rooms arranged in a U-shape. On the first floor, you find the front desk, lobby, lounge, hot spring baths, vending machines, coin laundry, and the courtyard bonfire area. The lounge also works as a coworking space, with Wi-Fi, power access, and extension cords, so you can read, plan your route, work, or talk with other travellers.

The drink bar in the lounge is available from 7:00 to 24:00 and offers soft drinks such as juice, coffee, and tea. You can also bring drinks back to your room. Vending machines sell drinks, local soft drinks, craft beer, snacks, light food, and bicycle-related items such as repair goods and nutrition supplies.

On the second floor, the common dining area becomes the breakfast venue in the morning and a shared space after breakfast. You can use it for light work, casual meetings, or relaxed time indoors. The shared kitchen is attached to this area and includes cooking basics for simple self-catering. A training space is also available on the second floor, and the separate meeting room can support private work sessions or group stays.

Activities

Cycling is a major part of the Kona Stay experience. Kona Cycle offers rental bicycles, including e-bikes, cross bikes, and kids’ bikes, along with cycling tours around Izu. You can ask for route advice, use bicycle-friendly support, and bring your bike into your room after riding. The entrance is designed with easy access in mind, so moving with a bicycle feels natural rather than awkward.

You do not need to cycle to enjoy the stay. You can use Kona Stay as a relaxed base for Izu Nagaoka, hot spring bathing, nearby restaurants, and local walks. If you want to do more, you can ask about activities such as diving, kayaking, canyoning, back-raft tours, and custom experiences through trusted local partners.
