Overview
Wakasa Mihama Onsen Yukyu no Ao Hotel Wansai, formerly Umi no Hotel Hirose, places you between the Sea of Japan, Wakasa Bay, the Mikata Five Lakes, and the green ridges of Mihama. In front of you, the coastline opens out toward Wakasa Bay. Behind you, you have the Ramsar-listed Mikata Five Lakes, plus Mt. Iikiri and Mt. Saneyama. This is a rare setting where you can enjoy the sea, lakes, and mountains in one stay.
You can slow down here with ocean-view rooms, fresh seafood, Japanese dining, and Mihama Onsen, a weakly alkaline hot spring known for leaving your skin feeling smooth. The hotel also works well as a base for nearby sightseeing, including the Mikata Five Lakes Nature Cruise, Rainbow Line, Kehi Jingu Shrine, Kumagawa-juku, and Kugushi Beach.
Accommodation
You can choose from 56 rooms in four main room types: Japanese-style rooms, Western-style rooms, Japanese-Western rooms, and one special room. The hotel has capacity for 200 people, making it suitable for couples, families, groups, and banquet stays. The rooms face the Sea of Japan and Wakasa Bay, so you can enjoy coastal views from your stay space.
Western Room: This twin room faces Wakasa Bay and gives you a relaxed resort-style stay with beds instead of futons. It is about 12 tatami mats or larger and includes a bath and toilet. It is a good choice when you want a room that feels easy to use after bathing or sightseeing.
Japanese Room: This tatami room faces Wakasa Bay and gives you a more classic Japanese-style stay. It is about 10 tatami mats or larger and includes a bath and toilet. From the balcony, you can look out toward the Sea of Japan, making it a comfortable choice when you want more floor space to sit, talk, and unwind.
Japanese-Western Room: This room type gives you a balance of Japanese-style space and Western-style comfort. It works well when you want tatami space but also prefer beds. Like the Japanese rooms, it faces the Sea of Japan and includes a bath and toilet.
Special Room “Kiwami Nagomi”: This is the hotel’s largest and most special room. It faces Wakasa Bay and includes twin beds, a 10-tatami Japanese room, a spacious layout, a terrace, and an observation bath where you can look out toward the sea while you bathe.
Dining
You can enjoy Japanese cuisine built around fresh seafood from the local coast. The hotel uses seafood landed at ports around Mihama and Wakasa Bay, including Hayase, Hiruga, Sugahama, and Tsuruga. Meals focus on seasonal “Wakasa-mono,” the local seafood flavors you can only fully enjoy in this region.
The kitchen values the heart of Japanese cooking: good water, fresh ingredients, and flavors that bring out the natural taste of the food. You can expect dishes that highlight the area’s fish, shellfish, and seaweed, along with local ingredients from Fukui.
Seasonal seafood changes through the year. In spring, you may find fish such as sea bream, mackerel, and halfbeak. In summer, local catches include squid, sea bass, black sea bream, octopus, and tuna. In autumn, you can enjoy seafood such as young yellowtail, tilefish, squid, barracuda, and Spanish mackerel. In winter, the area brings richer flavors such as fugu, Echizen crab, yellowtail, sweet shrimp, cod, and flounder.
Onsen and Wellness
Mihama Onsen is an ocean-view hot spring where you can soak while feeling close to the coast. The spring flows from Ooyabu in Mihama Town at 31 liters per minute. The water contains radon and sodium and is a bicarbonate spring with weakly alkaline, hypotonic qualities.
The weakly alkaline water softens the outer layer of the skin and helps emulsify the skin’s surface, which is why it is known as “beauty water” and “beautiful-skin water.”
The men’s large bath is Shiosai, located on the 1st floor of the Yuunagi building. The women’s large bath is Chokai, also on the 1st floor of the Yuunagi building. Both baths connect your onsen time with the feeling of the sea nearby.
Guests with Tattoos
Sadly, guests with tattoos are not permitted.
