Overview
Katasekan Hiina is an ocean-facing hot spring ryokan in Katase Onsen, Higashiizu. You stay close to the sea, with private hot spring bathing, Japanese-style rooms, and Izu creative cuisine called WAON. The ryokan focuses on three main pleasures: sea views, onsen time, and seafood-rich dining.
This is a good choice when you want a ryokan stay that feels relaxed and personal. You can use private baths without a reservation when they are open, enjoy natural hot spring water from the ryokan’s own source, and choose from five room types, including rooms with private open-air baths.
Accommodation
Katasekan Hiina offers five room types: a special room with an open-air bath, ocean-view rooms with open-air baths, ocean-view 10-tatami Japanese rooms, standard 10-tatami Japanese rooms, and a Japanese-style bedroom with two connected spaces.
The special room with an open-air bath is the only room of its kind at the ryokan. You have a spacious Japanese layout, a wood deck with sea views, and a large hinoki open-air bath. Both the bath and shower use hot spring water. The room includes a washing toilet, cooling and heating, washbasin, tokonoma alcove, refrigerator, TV, phone, safe, tea set, and kettle. Amenities include towels, bath towels, toothbrush, body soap, shampoo, conditioner, skincare items, hair dryer, yukata, tanzen jacket, and slippers.
The ocean-view room with an open-air bath has a 10-tatami Japanese room, a sitting area, and a Shigaraki-yaki ceramic open-air bath. You can soak while looking toward the sea, and the room bath and shower both use natural hot spring water.
The ocean-view 10-tatami Japanese room gives you a classic tatami stay with a sitting area facing the Izu sea. This room has an indoor bath with natural hot spring water, and the shower also uses hot spring water.
The standard 10-tatami Japanese room has a sukiya-style feel, a 10-tatami layout, a small entry space, and an indoor hot spring bath. The official room page notes that the sea can be harder to see from this room, so choose it when you care more about the ryokan atmosphere and onsen than a full ocean view.
The Japanese-style bedroom with two connected spaces is the only room of its type. You have a bedroom, a sofa area, a large LCD TV, and a 3.1ch home theater sound system. The room also has an indoor hot spring bath and a shower using hot spring water.
Dining
Dinner features Izu creative cuisine WAON, a Japanese-based course style that brings together local seafood, seasonal mountain ingredients, and careful handmade preparation. The ryokan highlights Izu specialties such as spiny lobster, abalone, and kinmedai golden-eye snapper.
You can choose from course styles that include dishes such as special simmered whole kinmedai, spiny lobster, abalone, kinmedai, and beef steak, depending on your plan. Extra dishes may include spiny lobster as sashimi or grilled in the shell, abalone as sashimi or grilled, and kinmedai as simmered whole fish or dried fish.
Meals are not served in your room. If you stay in a room with an open-air bath, you dine in the private ryotei-style dining area Hatoitei. If you stay in a general room, you dine in the Japanese restaurant Yumichaya. The ryokan keeps this style so your room stays private and undisturbed.
Breakfast is a full Japanese breakfast, served before you check out and paired with time to visit the shop for local souvenirs
Onsen and Wellness
Katasekan Hiina has its own hot spring source. The ryokan states that the hot spring water is used not only in the baths, but also in the room baths and showers. This means you can enjoy natural hot spring water even when you stay in a room with a private indoor bath.
The spring quality is sodium-calcium chloride spring water. Listed indications include arteriosclerosis, fatigue recovery, rheumatism, and neuralgia. Bath amenities include hair dryer, hand soap, body soap, shampoo, and conditioner.
The ryokan has six private open-air baths with sea views. You do not need a reservation. When a bath is available, you lock it from the inside and use it privately. You can use these baths more than once during the available bathing hours. The six open-air baths are Togasa, Manjiro, Manzaburo, Amanogawa, Bonbori, and Tsukimi.
You can also use a private indoor family bath. It is also available without reservation when open, and it can be used privately by locking the door from the inside.
If you want more private soaking time, choose a room with its own hot spring bath. Options include the special room with a large hinoki open-air bath and the ocean-view rooms with Shigaraki-yaki ceramic open-air baths.
For wellness beyond bathing, you can use the relaxation room Iyashi-dokoro Hina no Kakurebo for aromatherapy, facial treatments, reflexology, and other body care. In-room massage is also listed on the facilities page.
Guests with Tattoos
The ryokan has private-use baths and rooms with private hot spring baths, so you can reduce concern by choosing private bathing.
