Overview
At Hanare Matsushima-kaku, you stay in the special suite wing of Shousuke no Yado Taki-no-yu in Aizu Higashiyama Onsen, Fukushima. This ryokan carries the spirit of the former Ryokan Matsushima, a historic inn once known for welcoming writers, artists, and cultural figures. Today, you can enjoy that heritage through spacious rooms, private in-room baths, Aizu-style dining, and access to the hot springs of Taki-no-yu.
You are about 10 minutes by car from central Aizuwakamatsu, making this a comfortable base for exploring the city’s samurai history, castle town streets, and hot spring scenery. From the ryokan, you can enjoy views of the Yukawa stream, Fushimi-ga-taki waterfall, and the surrounding mountain landscape.
Accommodation
Your room is designed as a private retreat, and the ryokan states that staff try not to enter your room more than necessary. All rooms face the stream, so you can enjoy seasonal views, the sound of flowing water, and the quiet feel of Aizu Higashiyama Onsen.
You can choose from 10 rooms, each with its own design concept. Most rooms include a private open-air bath, while Sanshi-no-ma and Suimei-no-ma include a private view bath rather than an open-air bath. Room types include Japanese-Western suites, twin rooms, and Japanese-style rooms, with capacities ranging from 1 to 8 people depending on the room.
Room features may include a terrace, shower booth, washlet toilet, refrigerator, electric kettle, hair dryer, toiletries, yukata, bathrobe, safe, TV, DVD player, audio system, and air purifier, depending on the room. Wi-Fi is available in Matsushima-kaku rooms.
Dining
You can enjoy Aizu Kyodo Kaiseki cuisine, a meal style that blends local Aizu dishes with kaiseki presentation. The kitchen focuses on seasonal ingredients, local cooking traditions, and the food culture of Fukushima. Dinner is served from 18:00, with last order at 20:00, though times may change depending on the day.
Breakfast is prepared by the ryokan’s cooks and highlights Aizu rice with carefully prepared side dishes. Depending on the season and operation, you may also find breakfast service items such as freshly made mochi, Aizu imoni, and tofu. This is not a buffet-style all-you-can-eat service.
Your dining location depends on your room and plan. Options include dining rooms such as Ohara-tei, Kaika-tei, Hana-mizuki, and room dining for certain plans. For Hanare Matsushima-kaku, room dining is one of the main meal styles listed by the official site.
Onsen and Wellness
You can soak in the historic waters of Aizu Higashiyama Onsen, which the ryokan describes as a hot spring with around 1,300 years of history. The water is clear, colorless, and easy to bathe in, and the ryokan connects it with the Fushimi-ga-taki waterfall area beside the property.
In your room, you can enjoy your own private bath. Many Matsushima-kaku rooms include a private open-air bath with either a Shigaraki-yaki ceramic tub or a custom hiba wood tub, depending on the room. Sanshi-no-ma and Suimei-no-ma include a private view bath, not an open-air bath.
You can also use the main building baths, including large public baths, open-air baths, and paid private baths. Bath options include Fushimi-no-yu, Shousuke-buro, Takimi-no-yu, Inishie-no-yu, and several private baths such as Izayoi-no-yu, Shousuke-no-yu, Maboroshi-no-yu, Tennei Onsen, Hoshizora-no-yu, Tsukimi-no-yu, and Yumezora-no-yu.
Guests with Tattoos
Because most Matsushima-kaku rooms include a private open-air bath, you may still be able to enjoy bathing in your own room. For the main public baths or paid private baths, contact the ryokan before booking so you can confirm the current tattoo policy directly.
