Overview

Hakone Kowakien Mikawaya Ryokan has been welcoming guests for over 140 years. Located in the scenic area of Kowakudani, this ryokan offers a mix of traditional charm and natural beauty. Surrounded by Horaien Garden and the Hakone mountain range, the atmosphere is peaceful and nostalgic, yet always fresh. With a history that goes back to the Meiji era, Mikawaya Ryokan allows you to experience Hakone through the changing seasons, whether you stay in one of the historic rooms or a newer annex.

Accommodation

Mikawaya Ryokan has three different types of accommodations: the Main Building, the Detached Building, and the Annex. Each type provides a unique experience:

  • Main Building: Rooms here preserve a nostalgic atmosphere and are beloved by writers and artists. Some rooms have been kept as they were when guests like Sun Yat-sen stayed.
  • Detached Building: These rooms feature open-air baths and give a sense of privacy and tranquility. You can immerse yourself in nature while enjoying the view of fluttering flowers or the moon.
  • Annex: These rooms also offer open-air baths and are designed to blend with the surrounding nature, making them perfect for those who want to connect deeply with the environment.

Dining

Dining at Mikawaya Ryokan is an experience for all the senses. Meals are served in the restaurant, featuring locally sourced ingredients, including fresh seafood and seasonal vegetables. For dinner, you can enjoy dishes like the Mikawaya hotpot, made with local ingredients that change with the seasons. Breakfast includes delicacies such as a soy milk hotpot made with local spring water from Ohiradai. The carefully prepared dishes are complemented by a selection of Japanese sake and tea.

Onsen & Wellness

The ryokan features its own private hot spring, sourced from the mountain behind the property. The water is mildly alkaline. There is a large public bath with an outdoor section surrounded by nature, as well as a private bath for more secluded relaxation. The baths are available for use at any time, so you can enjoy the tranquility of the hot springs whenever you like. Additionally, the ryokan offers access to the outdoor bath “Hakone Kowakien Motoyu Mori no Yu,” which provides a relaxing experience with jacuzzis and a garden setting.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, you may use the private baths in your room. For public baths, please cover tattoos as needed.
