Overview

Hakone Onsen Yuyado Yama no Sho is a traditional ryokan with an Edo-period inspired design located in Sengokuhara, Hakone. The inn features wooden lattice doors, thick beams, and recreates the charm of an old Tokaido post station. Surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of Sengokuhara, Yama no Sho offers an experience that blends history, artful cuisine, and the soothing atmosphere of natural hot springs.

Accommodation

Yama no Sho offers rooms with a distinctly Japanese ambiance, featuring sunken kotatsu tables and lattice doors reminiscent of old Japan. The rooms are designed to make you feel the charm of the Edo period, with carefully preserved traditional elements and views of the surrounding nature. Each room includes cozy furnishings for an immersive experience of Japan’s past. The ryokan also offers ensuite baths, which use regular water and provide a private space for guests who prefer not to use the public hot springs.

Dining

Dining at Yama no Sho brings together fresh seafood from Sagami Bay and Suruga Bay, as well as seasonal vegetables from the mountains of Hakone. The kaiseki meals, prepared by Chef Imagi Ryoichi, highlight seasonal ingredients and reflect the beauty of Japanese cuisine. Breakfast is served in a basket-style presentation, featuring dishes that allow you to enjoy a refreshing morning on the Sengokuhara Plateau. The menu also includes options like shabu-shabu, sukiyaki, and Wagyu steak, which can be reserved for an additional fee.

Onsen & Wellness

The hot springs at Yama no Sho are sourced from Owakudani, one of Hakone’s famous twenty hot springs. The open-air baths are filled with cloudy, mineral-rich water that contains calcium, magnesium, sulfate, and chloride, known for their beneficial effects on the skin and muscles. These baths are available as private rentals for families and groups until 11 p.m., after which they are separated by gender. The ryokan also has an indoor bath area.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, you may use the private open-air baths by reserving your bathing time at check-in. After 11 p.m., public baths are available but are separated by gender.

Facilities

  • Hot Spring Entrance: Enter through the traditional lattice doors under a ‘goodwill’ curtain, evoking the atmosphere of a post-town bathhouse.
  • Rest Area: The ryokan offers a rest area with local newspapers and flyers about tourist spots to help you plan your exploration of Hakone.
  • Shop: The souvenir shop offers traditional Hakone crafts and marquetry items.
  • Hori Kotatsu: Every room features a sunken kotatsu table, perfect for cozy relaxation during cooler months.

Activities

Yama no Sho provides easy access to the Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands, which is just a five-minute walk away and home to over 1,700 plant species. You can also explore the local hiking courses, such as the popular paths around the Sengokuhara area. In autumn, enjoy a bath at night while listening to the calls of insects, a traditional pastime in Japan.
