Overview

Utsuwa stands at the foot of Ideyu-zaka in Beppu’s historic Kannawa Onsen district. You’ll find yourself surrounded by one of the most atmospheric hot spring areas in Japan. This is a stay-without-meals ryokan that follows a “no-meals-included” style, giving you full freedom to explore local dining.

From your room or the rooftop garden, you can take in panoramic views of Beppu Bay, Mount Tsurumi, Ogi-yama, and even Mount Takasaki. Utsuwa’s location puts you just minutes from sightseeing, dining, and cultural spots—perfect for a flexible, independent stay.

Accommodation

At Utsuwa, each room offers a unique, peaceful retreat, designed with natural wood and traditional Japanese charm. All rooms come with a private bath filled directly from the ryokan’s own hot spring source. You can choose between rooms in the Main Building or private detached villas at Yui-an.

Main Building (all rooms include an in-room hot spring bath):

Special Room – Shinki (100.12㎡) Includes a double living area, a Japanese-style room, and a bedroom with two double beds. You’ll have a hinoki wood tub with black granite, a private rooftop open-air bath, and even a stone sauna.

Standard Rooms (Mountain View)

  • Hōki (48.86㎡) and Saiki (57.34㎡): Both feature red granite hinoki baths and semi-double beds. Hōki allows smoking; Saiki does not.

Standard Rooms (Ocean View)

  • Myōki, Shuki, Gyokki, Uta-ki: Ranging from 46.6㎡ to 52.3㎡. These rooms offer views of Beppu Bay and Mount Takasaki, hinoki tubs with black ceramic panels, and semi-double beds. All are non-smoking except Myōki.
  • Reiki (56.53㎡): Smoking allowed. It includes a hinoki tub with black ceramic finish and space for up to five people.

Detached Villas – Yui-an (all rooms include open-air rock baths and indoor baths):

Each villa is completely separate, offering quiet and privacy.

  • Waki, Tatsuki, Chaki, Seiki, Senki, Riki, Kyūki: Each villa includes a king-size bed, an open-air rock bath, and a private indoor bath. Most are non-smoking, with select villas offering smoking options.

Dining

Utsuwa follows a “stay-only” style, which lets you enjoy meals your way. You’re free to bring in food, order delivery, or explore Beppu’s top-rated restaurants. Staff can recommend excellent places—from casual local favorites to special occasion spots.

If you prefer flexibility and don’t want to commit to a set menu or portion size, this style suits you perfectly. Enjoy the freedom to eat what you want, when you want, without sacrificing a beautiful ryokan experience.

Please avoid bringing strong-smelling items or grilling food in the rooms.

Onsen and Wellness

The spring water at Utsuwa comes from two different sources, both known for their quality. The baths include high levels of metasilicic acid, often called a “beauty ingredient,” which gently exfoliates your skin while keeping it soft and smooth.

Every room includes its own private indoor bath filled with spring water.

Two large open-air private baths—Kiseki (45㎡) and Kogane—are available 24 hours a day.

The rooftop footbath garden lets you soak your feet while enjoying a full 360° view of Beppu’s mountains and coastline.

The top-floor suite, Shinki, features a private open-air bath called Ruri, exclusively available to those staying in that room.

These waters are gentle on your body, have low osmotic pressure, and help warm you deeply from the inside out. Whether you’re soaking in your room or enjoying the large outdoor baths, you’ll feel the difference in the water.

Guests with Tattoos

You can enjoy the private baths regardless of whether you have tattoos. Since all baths are either in-room or reserved for private use, you won’t face any restrictions.
