About the Architecture
World-renowned architect Kengo Kuma designed the museum. Inspired by the concept of a traditional village (“MURA”), he created a series of small, sloped rooftops that blend into the Yufuin landscape. The black walls are made of Yakisugi, a traditional charred cedar, which absorbs into the scenery while making Mt. Yufu appear even more vivid.
As you move through the museum, you’ll feel the soft transitions of light, wind, and space. Each material—wood, paper, and earth—was chosen to age gracefully and reflect the passing of time.
In 2022, the museum expanded its exhibition space. The new structure rises gently toward the sky, deepening the connection between the natural world and contemporary art.
About the Logo
The museum’s logo, designed by Kenya Hara, is a minimalist square, carved from solid stainless steel. It reflects the museum’s architecture—modern, lean, and grounded in traditional materials. This simple shape expresses the human scale of the building and invites you to focus on the details around you.
Hara is known for his work with MUJI and many iconic Japanese brands. His design philosophy treats design as a form of cultural communication, and this logo connects modern art to Japanese aesthetic heritage.
