Overview

Step into a place where history echoes through every corridor. Hagihonjin stands proudly in Hagi, a city steeped in the legacy of samurai and stone-walled streets. The ryokan blends traditional Japanese design with spacious interiors and stunning views of the Japan Sea. You can relax deeply here while soaking in the charm of an old castle town. Whether you’re visiting for the onsen, the views, or the food, Hagihonjin offers an immersive experience rooted in the heritage of Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Accommodation

Choose from several room types, each designed to match your needs and taste. The top-tier suite, Shiori, sits on the eighth floor and features a private semi-open-air bath fed directly by the ryokan’s natural hot spring. This room provides the largest space at Hagihonjin and offers a luxurious experience with special furnishings.

Other rooms include:

  • Yukari and Tsuduri suites, both with scenic views and private baths.
  • Concept rooms on the 8th floor inspired by local culture and photography, perfect for travelers seeking a modern Japanese atmosphere.
  • Mixed Japanese-Western rooms on the 7th floor that overlook the city, ideal for families or friends.
  • Simple, well-equipped Western-style rooms on the 3rd and 4th floors, with both twin and triple options.
  • Traditional 10-tatami-mat Japanese rooms available on floors 3 through 7, with or without views.

Each room includes essentials like a yukata, towels, skincare products, and mineral water. Many rooms also have Simmons-brand beds for a restful sleep.

Dining

Savor the rich flavors of Hagi with multi-course kaiseki dinners served in elegant dining halls. You’ll enjoy seasonal seafood from the Sea of Japan, premium Kenran beef, and Yamaguchi’s famous fugu (blowfish), available throughout the year.

Special dinner options include:

  • Nagomi Kaiseki, a high-end course highlighting the region’s seasonal produce.
  • Yasuragi Kaiseki, a popular standard course.
  • Unishabu, where fresh seafood is gently swished in a rich sea urchin broth.
  • Fugu Full Course, available during colder months, offering the finest pufferfish dishes.

For breakfast, the buffet offers over 60 Japanese and Western dishes, featuring local ingredients and Hagi’s regional recipes. Don’t miss the house-made bread from the local bakery “Kore wa Tashika da.”

Meals are served in two dining areas: Shun-no-Maru and Hagi-no-Maru. Both offer relaxed seating and large windows for a comfortable start or end to your day.

Onsen and Wellness

Hagihonjin draws its mineral-rich water from a private spring 2,350 meters underground. The high ion content is said to benefit the skin, joints, and overall relaxation. Explore 14 different bathing areas connected by scenic walkways surrounding a central garden.

Soak in indoor baths with garden views, open-air baths inspired by Hagi’s stone walls, and even rare standing baths designed to boost circulation. There are also walking pools, foot baths, microbubble tubs, and saunas to help you fully unwind.

If you prefer privacy, you can book a private onsen for a 60-minute session. Massage services are available on-site, and the lounge area Macchoru offers massage chairs and a quiet space to relax after your bath.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, you can enjoy the onsen by reserving a private bath in advance. The front desk can help you make arrangements during your stay.
