Shonai Onsen

Shonai, nestled between the sea and the mountains in Yamagata Prefecture, is an onsen area steeped in natural beauty and ancient history. The region boasts a plethora of hot springs, each with its unique blend of minerals, set amidst lush landscapes and dramatic mountain backdrops. The most notable among them is the Yura Onsen, famed for its silky waters that are said to have healing properties for skin ailments.

The Shonai area, with its rich historical and cultural heritage, is much more than just hot springs. It’s a place where you can stroll through centuries-old rice fields, visit the majestic Dewa Sanzan mountain shrines, or indulge in the region’s exquisite cuisine, featuring fresh seafood and locally grown produce. The traditional farmhouses (gassho-zukuri) converted into inns offer a tranquil retreat after a day of exploration.
