Unzen Onsen

Unzen Onsen, nestled in the heart of Nagasaki Prefecture, is a captivating hot spring resort with a rich history. The area, which lies at the foot of the active Unzen volcano, is renowned for its hellish landscape, known as jigoku (hells), characterized by steaming hot springs, bubbling mud pools, and a distinct sulfurous smell. Unzen’s hot spring water is highly acidic, a unique characteristic that is believed to have numerous health benefits.

The charm of Unzen Onsen goes beyond the springs. The area is a gateway to Unzen-Amakusa National Park, offering natural beauty in the form of hiking trails, mountain peaks, and breathtaking views of Shimabara Peninsula. The town itself exudes a traditional ambiance with its quaint streets lined with ryokan (Japanese inns), local shops, and eateries serving regional delicacies. The Unzen Ropeway is another attraction, providing panoramic views of the volcanic landscape and the surrounding area.
