Oboke-Iya Onsen

Oboke-Iya Onsen is a serene retreat nestled in the rugged valleys of Tokushima Prefecture, Shikoku, Japan. The region is a treasure trove of natural beauty, with the emerald-green Yoshino River carving its course through the heart of it. The onsens here are particularly admired for their mineral-rich waters, which are believed to have therapeutic properties. One of the highlights is the Kazura-bashi (vine bridge) onsen, where the baths are perched alongside a dramatic gorge, offering an unparalleled soak in nature’s splendour.

The timeless charm of Oboke-Iya Onsen extends beyond its natural hot springs. The area is also noted for its preserved kazurabashi, or vine bridges, which once served as the only means of communication for the isolated mountain communities. The serene rural landscape, dotted with traditional thatched-roof houses, and the local cuisine featuring river fish and wild vegetables, provide a unique insight into Japan’s rural culture and history. An immersive stroll down the village paths is as restorative as a dip in the healing waters of the onsen.
