Overview
Azumaen offers you a relaxing escape in the heart of Unzen, overlooking the tranquil waters of Oshidori Pond. As you step inside, the outside world fades away, replaced by timeless Japanese elegance and heartfelt hospitality. Whether you’re soaking in a hot spring or savoring a carefully prepared meal, Azumaen invites you to forget your schedule and enjoy every moment.
This lakeside ryokan blends tradition with thoughtful touches, creating a peaceful space where time slows down. The scenery changes with each season, turning your stay into a vivid memory shaped by nature, comfort, and warmth.
Accommodation
Azumaen offers several room types, many with private open-air or semi-open-air baths fed by the ryokan’s own hot spring. Every room opens to views of the pond, birds in flight, or the soft glow of the sunset. Whether you choose a traditional Japanese-style room or one that includes Western elements, you’ll find comfort and space to unwind.
The newest addition, Suisyoku, features four beds and a private open-air bath. Other options include Riyu and Matsurika, each with tatami rooms, twin beds, and a sofa. For a more refined experience, the Azuma and Subaru suites offer expansive layouts, including tearooms and Western-style spaces.
Each room at Azumaen is non-smoking and designed to reflect traditional Japanese aesthetics. Whether you’re traveling solo or with family, you’ll find a room that suits your pace.
Dining
Your stay includes thoughtfully prepared meals using local seafood from the Ariake Sea and seasonal vegetables from Unzen and Shimabara. Dinner features kaiseki-style courses served in your room, in a private dining room, or at one of Azumaen’s restaurants—On the Lake or In the Cloud.
You’ll enjoy dishes that blend bold flavors with delicate presentation, all crafted without processed ingredients. Each course arrives in carefully selected Arita porcelain, adding elegance to the experience. From grilled seasonal fish to tender terrines and warm bowls of soup made with Azumaen’s signature flying-fish broth, every dish honors the flavors of the region.
Breakfast continues the journey with a spread of Japanese-style comfort foods. Enjoy freshly steamed Kyushu-grown rice, miso soup, seasonal vegetables, and local specialties that start your day gently and deliciously.
Onsen and Wellness
Azumaen’s hot springs draw from a private natural source and offer a deeply soothing experience. As you soak, you’ll look out over Oshidori Pond and the distant Unzen mountains, creating the feeling of bathing within the landscape itself.
The Rien bathhouse includes indoor and outdoor baths, as well as a cold-water bath and sauna. Wooden beams and natural stone create a space that reflects the beauty outside, while subtle temperature differences among the baths allow you to cycle through and experience the full benefits of the mineral-rich waters.
The waters contain metasilicic acid, known as “nature’s lotion,” and offer one of the highest concentrations in the Unzen area. These waters help soften and hydrate your skin while soothing muscle aches and promoting circulation.
Private open-air baths are available in eight room types, giving you the freedom to enjoy the onsen at your own pace, day or night.
Guests with Tattoos
If you have tattoos, you can enjoy the private onsen baths located in your room. These offer the same mineral-rich waters and scenic views, with complete privacy and no restrictions.
Facilities
Azumaen provides thoughtful amenities to enhance your stay. You’ll find a relaxation lounge for unwinding after your bath, stocked with natural spring water and calming views of the pond. The lobby offers free Wi-Fi and a calm space to sit and reflect.
The ryokan’s two restaurants, On the Lake and the newly opened In the Cloud, each provide different perspectives of the surrounding landscape while you dine. Whether you prefer lakeside calm or the feeling of floating above the clouds, your meals come with a view.
Azumaen also supports weddings, group visits, and wellness retreats. The spacious public areas accommodate quiet moments and lively celebrations alike.

During your stay, take time to walk around Oshidori Pond or explore the natural surroundings of Unzen. You can also enjoy seasonal events, including stargazing from the outdoor baths or taking part in cultural workshops.
