Gion Shinmonso is a charming ryokan with 21 rooms, situated by the Shirakawa River in Kyoto’s historic Gion district. It offers an ideal base for exploring the city’s rich cultural heritage, with easy access to famous landmarks. Shinmonso combines traditional Japanese hospitality with a refined culinary experience, allowing you to relax in comfortable Japanese-modern rooms while enjoying the elegance of maiko performances.
Accommodation
Shinmonso provides a range of traditional guest rooms, each designed to deliver comfort and tranquility. You can choose between different types of rooms depending on your needs:
- Botan: Facing the Shirakawa River, this exclusive room includes a newly added shower and a dressing area, perfect for preparing comfortably.
- Wakanae: This spacious room is suitable for families or groups, with a barrier-free design and plenty of storage.
- Uraha: Featuring chic black tatami, this room creates a calm and refined atmosphere. The shower room and toilet are separate for convenience.
- Kikyo: With a mix of antique charm and modern touches, this open-plan room features two sinks, making it easy to get ready.
- Fuji (Standard Room): Designed by the inn’s owner, this room has a simple Japanese-modern style with unique shelves and tatami mats.
Dining
Shinmonso is proud of its culinary heritage, which dates back to its founding as a “culinary ryokan” in 1949. Dinner is served with not only an emphasis on taste but also on exquisite antique plates, including Baccarat glassware, Imari, and Old Noritake pieces. The meals feature beautiful presentations, designed to match your preferences and provide a truly personalized dining experience.
Onsen & Wellness
Relax in the ryokan’s bright and serene large communal baths. You can soak away the day’s fatigue in a peaceful atmosphere. The baths are open from 4:00 PM to 1:00 AM and from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM, accommodating up to 20 people at a time.

If you have a tattoo, please contact the ryokan in advance to see if accommodations can be made for you to use the public baths or if private alternatives are available.
