Overview
Step into another time at Kansuiro Ryokan, a cultural property where you can experience the romance of the Taisho era. For over a century, this historic ryokan has welcomed Japan’s imperial family, prime ministers, and great literary minds like Soseki Natsume and Toson Shimazaki.
As you walk through the halls, you’ll see heirlooms, calligraphy, and architecture that reflect a bygone age. The four-story wooden tower, constructed without a central pillar using rare Jindai cedar, is a marvel of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Inside and out, Kansuiro Ryokan surrounds you with history, beauty, and tranquility.

The ryokan does not offer in-room safes, but you can store valuables at the front desk.
Dining
Dinner and breakfast are part of the traditional ryokan experience at Kansuiro. Meals are served in your room and prepared using fresh, seasonal ingredients.
Dinner: A full-course Japanese meal featuring seafood and produce from Hakone’s mountains and Sagami Bay. Menus change monthly. Vegetarian options are available with prior notice, but the kitchen cannot remove bonito-based broth or accommodate vegan or gluten-free requests.
Breakfast: A classic Japanese breakfast, prepared with care and served in-room. If you’re traveling in a group, meals can be arranged in a private dining space.
Dinner begins at 6:00 p.m. If you arrive after 6:30 p.m., the ryokan may not be able to serve dinner.

Relax in one of the ryokan’s scenic hot springs. Kansuiro offers both indoor and open-air baths, filled with fresh hot spring water in the kakenagashi style (free-flowing and non-recycled).
- Iwaburo: A Taisho-era bathhouse with stained glass, mosaic tiles, and mineral-rich water from a natural geyser.
- Roten Buro: Open-air bath beside the Hayakawa River. Enjoy seasonal views while soaking in nature.
- Private Onsen (Suehiro-no-yu): Located on the third floor, this bath offers a quiet, private space for a 30-minute soak. No reservations required—just lock the door when in use.
- Healing Stone Spa: A rock bed bath with relaxing heat and smooth-stone surfaces. Open from 4:00 p.m. to midnight. Clothing and towels are provided. Additional fee applies.
Bathing hours: 3:00 p.m. – 9:30 a.m. (next morning)
Please remember to wash your body before entering the bath. Do not use soap or shampoo in the tub, and avoid placing towels in the water. To keep your skin soft, refrain from showering immediately after bathing.
Guests with Tattoos
The ryokan does not mention tattoo restrictions for the public baths. If you’re concerned, consider using the private bath on the third floor for a more comfortable experience.
