Overview

Nantenen sits in the scenic Amami area, surrounded by the Kongo-Katsuragi mountains. Originally built in 1935 and designed by famed architect Tatsuno Kingo, the inn offers a blend of historical charm and natural beauty. The 10,000m² Japanese garden features seasonal flowers, wild birds, and a serene pond, creating a peaceful setting throughout the year.

Accommodation

Nantenen offers 14 Japanese-style rooms, including one special detached room with an open-air bath. Each room showcases traditional design with tatami floors, sliding doors, and handcrafted woodwork. Choose from garden-facing rooms on the first or second floor, each offering seasonal views and a quiet atmosphere.

  • Seiryutei: A luxurious private suite with an open-air bath, available to one group per day.
  • Garden View Rooms: 8-tatami and 12-tatami rooms with additional space for families or groups.
  • Features: All rooms include a washlet toilet, sink, and are non-smoking. You can use the outdoor smoking area if needed.

Dining

Savor seasonal kaiseki meals made with local ingredients and traditional techniques. You can choose from several meal plans, including:

  • Selectable Kaiseki: Choose your main dish—Wagyu beef, Kawachi duck, eel, or sea bream shabu-shabu.
  • Basic Kaiseki: Enjoy a full-course meal in a room designed by Tatsuno Kingo.
  • Anniversary, Ladies’, and Couple Plans: Celebrate a special day or relax with friends over seasonal dishes.

For breakfast, the ryokan serves a Japanese set featuring freshly made rice, miso soup with clams, and fluffy tamagoyaki.

Onsen and Wellness

The large public bath uses natural radon hot spring water. This spring is known for boosting circulation, easing muscle pain, and promoting skin health. You can bathe throughout the day, except during cleaning hours (9:30–11:00). Amenities include shampoo, conditioner, lotions, and shaving products.

Guests with Tattoos

You may not be able to use the shared baths if you have tattoos. Contact the ryokan in advance to ask about private use or accommodation options.
