Overview
Obokekyo Mannaka places you right in the heart of Oboke Gorge, a dramatic canyon carved over millions of years by the powerful Yoshino River. You’re only a three-minute walk from the sightseeing boat dock, yet you feel a world away from the modern rush. This inn offers a deep connection to nature and a stay filled with quiet comfort. You’ll enjoy heartfelt hospitality, meals unique to this region, and a relaxing onsen experience with views that linger in your memory.
The name “Mannaka” means “center,” reflecting both the inn’s location in the middle of the gorge and its belief that hospitality begins with the heart. Every detail here—whether it’s the warmth of the staff or the scent of the river—brings you closer to the soul of Shikoku.
Accommodation
Every room at Obokekyo Mannaka was fully renovated in March 2024, designed with your comfort in mind. The upgrades come straight from past traveler feedback. Inside your room, you’ll find modern amenities like Dyson hairdryers, nano steamers, humidifiers, air purifiers, multi-chargers, and Wi-Fi.
The rooms are spacious and peaceful, offering a quiet escape after a day in nature. Large windows let in the natural light and the sound of the river. Whether you’re traveling alone, with a partner, or as a family, you’ll settle into a space built to make you feel at ease.
Dining
Obokekyo Mannaka serves meals rooted in the flavors of Tokushima’s Nishi-Awa region. The chefs use fresh local ingredients and additive-free seasonings. Every meal reflects the land—wild mountain herbs, sweet river fish, hand-cut soba noodles. These aren’t just dishes; they’re stories of the region told through flavor.
You’ll taste items like salt-grilled ayu sweetfish, handmade Iya soba, and rice flavored with seasonal vegetables. Breakfast is nourishing and balanced, while dinner brings out the best of local ingredients in creative and satisfying ways. If you choose the Wagyu beef plan, you’ll savor premium cuts of Tokushima Black Wagyu grilled to perfection.
Onsen and Wellness
The open-air bath at Obokekyo Mannaka offers a direct view of the Yoshino River’s emerald current and the red bridge that spans the gorge. Two types of spring water flow here: natural simple sulfur spring water and an artificial radium-style mineral bath.
As you soak, listen to the birds, watch the river sparkle, and let the mountain breeze carry away the stress. The view is beautiful year-round, especially in the early morning mist or during fall when the trees catch fire in color. This is not just a bath—it’s a full-body immersion in nature.
Guests with Tattoos
If you have tattoos, you are welcome to enjoy the baths without concern. For added privacy, ask the staff about quiet times or less-crowded hours. The inn will do everything possible to make your stay comfortable.
Facilities
Inside the same building, you’ll find a restaurant and souvenir shop above the boat dock. After your cruise, sit down to a warm meal while watching the river. The restaurant serves dishes made with regional ingredients like Tokushima-grown wasabi leaves, roasted Naruto Kintoki sweet potatoes, and Iya soba noodles.
The shop offers a rich selection of local goods. You can try samples of Oboke tea, browse sake from all four Shikoku prefectures, or buy dried ayu fish, local sweets, and handmade crafts. Many products are available for nationwide delivery, so you can send a piece of Oboke home with you.
The inn also provides large, medium, and small event halls. Parking is free for up to 150 vehicles, including tour buses. The EV charging station includes four ports, available through a dedicated mobile app.
Activities
Start your visit with a boat ride through the gorge. Just walk three minutes to the pier and board the sightseeing boat for a 30-minute tour. You’ll float past towering rock faces, layers of stone shaped over 200 million years, and hidden curves of the V-shaped valley. No reservation is needed, and the boat runs every day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
The area is also rich in places to explore. You’re within 30 minutes of the Iya Kazurabashi vine bridge, the cliffside Manneken Pis statue, and thrilling rafting routes. Visit Konakijii, the mythical child spirit from GeGeGe no Kitaro, or explore nearby Iya—known as one of Japan’s three most mysterious places.
Whether you’re coming with friends, as a couple, or for a solo journey, Obokekyo Mannaka offers ideas on how to spend your time. Take a peaceful forest walk, taste new flavors, soak in the bath, and let the rhythms of the gorge slow your pace.
