Overview

Step into a space where tradition and innovation blend effortlessly. Japanese Hotel Ohashikan invites you to experience the harmony of East and West in the heart of Matsue, a city of water and stories. Inspired by the legacy of writer Lafcadio Hearn—known in Japan as Koizumi Yakumo—this ryokan honors the spirit of wakon-yōsai, combining Japanese soul with Western knowledge.

You’ll stay in a place with a unique cultural background and deep local roots. From the design of the rooms to the thoughtfully prepared cuisine, every part of your visit reflects this blend of styles. Spend time by Lake Shinji, enjoy the sounds of geta on stone paths, and feel the charm of a ryokan that respects history while embracing today.

Accommodation

Ohashikan offers six types of rooms designed for modern comfort with a traditional touch. Out of 20 total rooms, 13 feature beds instead of futons, giving you more options based on your personal style of travel.

You can choose the Concept Room Lafcadio, a designer suite inspired by Koizumi Yakumo himself. Every detail, from furniture to bedding, reflects thoughtful craftsmanship and carefully selected materials.

If you’re here for the view, stay in a Twin Room with an Open-Air Bath. Watch the sun set over Lake Shinji while soaking in a private hot spring bath. For a mix of classic and contemporary, try the Japanese Comfort Room or the Comfort Twin Room, both designed to feel like a modern city hotel with a ryokan atmosphere.

Need more space? The Renovated Twin Room and Traditional Tatami Room are also available, letting you relax however you like. Whether you travel solo, as a couple, or with family, you’ll find a room that fits.

Dining

Every meal at Ohashikan celebrates the art of pairing food with sake. The culinary theme here is all about “marriage”—not just between ingredients, but between flavors, seasons, and traditions.

Dinner features seasonal ingredients from the San’in region, with standout specialties like crab, sea bass, and blackthroat seaperch. The ryokan sources local sake from Izumo and lets a mysterious sake connoisseur named KO handle the pairings. You’ll taste the results of careful, personal selection with every sip.

Some dinner courses also include dishes by the chef of Grill & Bar The Willows, who blends Japanese kaiseki with Polynesian-inspired flavors. This collaboration brings a unique twist to traditional ryokan dining.

Onsen and Wellness

The hot spring at Ohashikan flows from deep beneath the city of Matsue. It’s a mildly alkaline spring, packed with minerals like sulfate, metasilicic acid, and calcium. Locals call it a “beautifying bath” because of its smooth, skin-softening qualities.

You’ll bathe in a retro-style public bathhouse that takes you back to Japan’s Showa era. The design and atmosphere create a nostalgic mood—perfect for slow evenings or early-morning refreshment.

The bath also features a “Mirable” beauty shower, which uses ultra-fine bubbles to cleanse and moisturize. It’s especially gentle for sensitive skin and enhances the effects of the hot spring water.

Bath Access

  • Open from 6:00–9:00 and 16:00–24:30
  • The men’s and women’s baths rotate on a schedule
  • Mirable showers available in the bathing area

Guests with Tattoos

The ryokan does not specify tattoo policies online. If you have tattoos, contact the ryokan in advance to ask about public bath access or private bath options.
