Overview
Roppokan stands beside the peaceful Chikugo River in Harazuru Onsen, a historic hot spring town in northern Kyushu. From every room, you can gaze out over rice fields, the flowing river, and distant mountains. The name “Roppokan” comes from the six famous peaks visible from the inn—Mount Aso, Mount Sefuri, Mount Yufu, Mount Hiko, Mount Homan, and Mount Mino. Since opening in 1885 as a simple home bathhouse, Roppokan has welcomed travelers seeking comfort and healing in its waters. Today, it continues to offer a stay that balances traditional style with modern ease.
Accommodation
All rooms at Roppokan face the Chikugo River. You can choose from traditional Japanese spaces, hybrid Japanese-Western rooms, or modern suites with open-air baths.
Special Rooms with Half Open-Air Baths
Located on the top floor, these suites let you soak under the stars in your own private bath. You can enjoy the natural mineral water while watching the river below or sky above.
Semi-Special Barrier-Free Rooms
These rooms, like “KujĹ«” and “Takachiho,” feature handrails, step-free layouts, and wide-entry restrooms—ideal if you need easier mobility or accessibility. Other semi-special rooms have updated baths and bed setups for your comfort.
Standard Japanese Rooms (8–12 tatami)
These rooms keep a classic layout, perfect for relaxing with simple comfort. They’re ideal if you prefer to spend more time enjoying the meals and baths than staying indoors.
Standard Twin Rooms (8 tatami)
These rooms mix Japanese style with two beds. Their compact design works well for couples or friends looking for a quiet stay.
Modern Twin Rooms (22 tatami)
These dog-friendly rooms let you stay with your pet. You’ll find a cage, dishware, and pet sheets ready for use. Located on the second floor, they give you easy access to the riverbank for walks.
No matter the room you choose, the view and river breeze invite deep relaxation. Bedding is laid out for you during dinner if you have more than two travelers.
Dining
Meals at Roppokan highlight seasonal ingredients from the region. The chefs create carefully planned courses that guide you dish by dish, focusing on balance, timing, and presentation. You’ll taste refined flavors in thoughtful portions.
Dinners feature creative Japanese cuisine—starting with delicate starters, moving through grilled specialties, and finishing with a comforting soup and dessert. Dishes use local ingredients like pufferfish, octopus, Japanese beef, and seasonal vegetables. If you’re staying in a special room, you can enjoy a more elaborate course prepared exclusively by the head chef.
Breakfast includes homemade pickles, fresh vegetables, tofu, grilled fish, simmered dishes, and fruit. You’ll dine in a bright setting that welcomes you into the day.
If you have allergies or preferences, you can share them when you book. The staff will adjust your meal so you can dine with peace of mind.
Onsen and Wellness
The hot spring at Harazuru is known as the “Double Beauty Bath.” The water combines two beneficial types:
- Alkaline simple spring: Helps remove dead skin cells, leaving your skin smooth and hydrated.
- Simple sulfur spring: Gently lifts excess oil and melanin, giving your skin a lighter, clearer appearance.
Soak in the baths on the first and fourth floors. The rooftop garden bath looks out over the Chikugo River and offers beautiful views at sunrise, sunset, or under the stars. Indoor options include cypress baths, stone baths, and bamboo charcoal baths. Each offers a different scent, texture, and mineral content.
Roppokan switches men’s and women’s baths daily so you can try more than one style during your stay.
Extra touches include baby beds, anti-slip mats, herbal teas, and hydrogen-rich water in the first-floor bath lounge.
Guests with Tattoos
Tattoos are allowed in the private onsen bath. If you would like to use the public bath, please check with reception first.
