Sagasawakan is a peaceful ryokan located in central Izu, a 2-hour drive or 2.30 hours by public transport from Tokyo. Each room overlooks the Kano River. Sagasawakan ryokan is spectacular with its seven different hot spring baths, each with unique characteristics and known for their health benefits, including skin care and pain relief.
The dining experience at Sagasawakan focuses on seasonal kaiseki cuisine, with fresh local seafood and vegetables. The menu changes monthly, ensuring you will enjoy the latest seasonal flavors.
The entrance of the ryokan combines traditional and contemporary design elements, creating a welcoming and relaxing environment right from the moment you arrive.
Accommodation
The rooms at Sagasawakan ryokan are designed based on natural and traditional Japanese aesthetic. Sagasawakan features three types of accommodations:
- Japanese-Western Rooms: These rooms combine modern and traditional elements, furnished with either a bed or Japanese futon, and feature a spacious living area. They provide ample space and include open-air baths with scenic views.
- Traditional Japanese Rooms: Equipped with comfortable Japanese beds, these rooms offer a more traditional experience with the added luxury of private open-air baths.
- Spacious Tatami Rooms: Located near the Kano River, these rooms offer a serene environment with the relaxing sounds of the river, ideal for a peaceful stay.
The rooms underwent renovations in 2022, enhancing their comfort and modern appeal. The Japanese-Western rooms were updated with modern furnishings, including comfortable beds and spacious living areas. These rooms comfortably accommodate up to four guests and offer open-air baths with views of the surrounding mountains and the Kano River. Rooms close to the river were renovated to include modern Simmons semi-double beds.
Dining
The dining experience is a highlight of your stay, with a focus on Kyoto-style cuisine that changes monthly, capturing the essence of each season. The ingredients are carefully selected for their freshness and seasonal relevance, including local seafood and mountain produce unique to the Izu region.
Meals are served in private dining rooms, allowing guests to dine comfortably with family or as a couple.
The dining hours are from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM for breakfast and from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM for dinner.
Onsen & Wellness
Sagasawakan’s spa features a diverse range of natural hot spring baths, including outdoor, public, family, and private rental baths, along with detoxifying rock bed baths. Sagasawakan ryokan, after all, is known for its 7 onsen.
Unique bathing experiences include open-air baths with scenic views of the Amagi mountains, large indoor baths, and private baths designed for relaxation and rejuvenation.
If you have tattoos, make sure to reserve either the private bath (40 minutes, reservation after arrival) or take a room with your private onsen.
For extra wellness, treatments, the spa also offers personalized facial and body treatments. The seasonally open outdoor pool has a shallow area for children.

- Shuzenji Temple: Visit the historical temple that inspired the Shuzenji Temple Story play, enveloped in greenery and famous for its autumn foliage.
- Shuzenji Nijino Sato: Take a stroll to the park filled with flowers and plants, featuring themed villages like the British and Canadian villages.
- Asahi Waterfall: Located in Izu City, this 105m long waterfall is known for its six tiers.
- Joren Waterfall: One of the largest and most famous waterfalls in Izu, with a 25m drop over basalt rock.
- Amagi Tunnel: The oldest stone-built road tunnel in Japan, famous from the story “The Dancing Girl of Izu”
