Overview

Stay in the heart of Yoshino’s history at Yoshinosou Yukawaya, a traditional ryokan built from the rich, fragrant wood of the Yoshino area. This beautifully crafted building reflects the unique architectural style of the region, offering you a warm and inviting atmosphere from the moment you arrive.

The ryokan sits just a five-minute walk from Zao-do, the main hall of Kinpusen Temple. This temple, a designated National Treasure and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, is one of Japan’s largest wooden structures, second only to Todaiji’s Great Buddha Hall in Nara.

The area surrounding the ryokan is steeped in the spiritual traditions of Shugendo, a mountain ascetic practice founded by En no Gyoja in the 7th–8th century. For over 720 years, the ryokan has kept a statue of En no Gyoja, adding to its deep historical connection.

Yoshino is also famous for its cherry blossoms, a tradition that began when En no Gyoja carved a Buddha statue from cherry wood. Today, more than 30,000 trees bloom here each spring, creating a breathtaking sea of soft pink and white.

Accommodation

The ryokan offers 14 Japanese-style rooms, each designed with tatami floors and traditional décor to immerse you in the essence of Yoshino’s culture. Whether you want a cozy space for relaxation or a larger room for family travel, you will find an option that suits your needs and budget.

Your room comes equipped with:

  • Yukata robe and sash
  • Towels and washcloth
  • Toothbrush set and disposable pouch
  • Air conditioner and fridge
  • TV and safety box
  • Hair dryer
  • Western-style toilet (two rooms have Japanese-style toilets)

Check-in begins at 15:30, and check-out is at 10:00.

Dining

Every stay at Yoshinosou Yukawaya includes the chance to enjoy a multi-course Japanese kaiseki dinner, served in your room for complete privacy. The highlight is the ryokan’s original Saigyo Nabe, a hot pot featuring fresh seasonal mountain vegetables, tender chicken, and a rich broth thickened with locally produced Yoshino honkuzu (pure arrowroot starch). This specialty is so unique that it is a registered trademark.

Many other dishes also feature honkuzu, known for its health benefits and smooth texture. Depending on the season, your meal may include specialties like kudzu rice cakes, noodles, or sweets.

Breakfast includes Yoshino’s traditional chagayu (tea rice porridge), a warm and comforting way to start the day. You can enjoy breakfast either in your room or in the dining hall.

Onsen and Wellness

Unwind in the ryokan’s rocky bath, designed to help you release the tension of daily life. The water is an artificial spa with natural radium properties, offering a gentle, soothing soak that leaves you refreshed and relaxed.
