Overview
Kofukan sits at the foot of Mount Myoko, where the landscape of Niigata’s countryside surrounds you in every season. Since opening in 1922, the ryokan has offered a warm and heartfelt welcome rooted in tradition. You’ll feel this from the moment you step inside. The owner personally picks flowers from nearby hills and arranges them in each room, adding a personal touch to your stay. Kofukan gives you a quiet place to rest, reflect, and enjoy the simple pleasures of mountain life.
Accommodation
Kofukan offers a range of rooms across its main, annex, and new buildings:
- Main Building: Stay in traditional Japanese rooms with tatami mats and quiet views. Some rooms include an attached sitting space for extra comfort.
- New Wing: Choose from Japanese-style rooms with bathrooms or twin rooms with Western-style beds. These rooms include a bath and toilet.
- Annex: Relax in Japanese rooms with a classic style. Some have private baths and toilets, while others include a traditional washroom.
All rooms offer Wi-Fi, yukata robes, towels, toiletries, and tea sets. You can breathe in the clean mountain air, open the windows to a forest view, and enjoy a space where you truly slow down.
Dining
Meals at Kofukan reflect the flavors of the surrounding mountains and sea. The kitchen prepares every dish using fresh, seasonal ingredients from nearby farms, forests, and fishing ports.
- Rice: Taste the sweetness of 100% Koshihikari rice, grown with care by local farmers in Myoko’s fields.
- Miso: Enjoy miso soup made with award-winning miso from Aoki Brewery in Joetsu. You can even try it on rice, just as locals do.
- Ingredients: From wild mountain vegetables to seafood from the Sea of Japan, every dish highlights the richness of Niigata’s natural surroundings. Spring brings rare greens, summer offers corn and tomatoes, and autumn fills your table with mushrooms and fruits.
- Sake: Pair your meal with sake from Myoko’s top brewers—Kiminonoi, Ayumasamune, and Chiyonohikari. You can also try local beer or wines from Iwanohara Vineyard, founded by the father of Japanese wine, Zenbei Kawakami.
You’ll dine in one of several private dining rooms: Myoko-tei, Kafu-tei, Kaede, Fuji, or Honami. The atmosphere is relaxed and traditional, allowing you to enjoy each bite in peace.
Onsen and Wellness
Since opening, Kofukan has continued to draw hot spring water directly from Myoko’s Minamijigokudani source. The soft, mildly alkaline water gently soothes your body and leaves your skin refreshed.
- Public Baths: Each bathhouse features retro-style interiors with wood, stone, and mosaic tile. You can soak in a large indoor bath or enjoy the fresh air in a connected open-air bath.
- Private Bath “Kai”: Reserve this bath for a more personal and quiet experience. Originally called “Otome no Yu” and named by painter Hoan Kosugi, the bath retains its classic shape but now includes thoughtful upgrades to the tub and window views.
The water helps with neuralgia, rheumatism, fatigue, and skin conditions. Spend your time here soaking under the open sky, letting the warmth of the springs ease your body.
Guests with Tattoos
You are welcome to use the onsen facilities. If you prefer privacy, reserve the private bath “Kai” during your stay.
