Overview
Shirafune Grand Hotel stands at 1,400 meters above sea level, hidden among the towering mountains of Japan’s Northern Alps. You’ll find it between Kamikochi and Norikura Highlands, deep inside the forests of Chūbu-Sangaku National Park. With over 600 years of history, the hotel is part of the Shirahone Onsen region—famous for its soft, milky-white hot spring waters.
The name “Shirahone” means “white bone,” inspired by the spring’s unique appearance. Locals say, “If you bathe for three days, you won’t catch a cold for three years.” The water is gentle on your skin and helps with fatigue, digestion, and stress. You can even drink it to experience the benefits from the inside out.

Dining
Every meal here celebrates the natural ingredients of Nagano and the surrounding regions. You’ll enjoy seasonal dishes served in a relaxed setting. One specialty is “Shirafune Nabe,” a local hotpot made with soy milk and changing seasonal ingredients.
The kitchen uses local produce, including Shinshu beef, Shinshu salmon, Azumino herb chicken, hydroponic vegetables, and locally grown Koshihikari rice. These meals bring out the natural flavors of each ingredient with care and precision.
If you have food allergies, let the hotel know at least 14 days in advance. Vegetarian options are available with early notice, but vegan meals are not supported.
You’ll dine in one of several venues, depending on your booking:
- “Shinano” Dining Room
- “Shiki” Dining Hall
- “Ryujin” Banquet Hall (for larger parties)
- “Setsugekka” Hall (mid-sized gatherings)
Onsen and Wellness
The hotel’s main feature is its hot spring baths. These mineral-rich waters bubble up naturally from ten underground sources. The water is gentle on your skin, helps ease joint pain and fatigue, and can even be sipped for internal healing.

Open-Air Bath
Surrounded by nature, this bath sits under the sky and lets you soak in fresh mountain air while the water warms you to the core.
Private Family Bath
Spend quiet time in a bath made just for couples, families, or friends. This space includes both an indoor and outdoor tub and must be reserved in advance.
Guests with Tattoos
The hotel does not specify a tattoo policy, but many traditional onsen facilities restrict entry for those with tattoos. It’s best to ask the hotel directly before booking.
