Overview
Suihouen invites you to enjoy a peaceful retreat in the hills of Gero Onsen, one of Japan’s three most celebrated hot springs. Surrounded by nature and tradition, this ryokan offers you a quiet space to relax, savor seasonal cuisine, and unwind in mineral-rich baths. The name of the signature meal, “Yojo Kaiseki,” means a meal that stays in your heart. Everything at Suihouen—from the dining experience to the open-air baths—is designed to create a memorable stay tailored for adults seeking calm and refinement.
Accommodation
Suihouen offers 16 rooms across the main building and the annex Yukatei. Each space brings together traditional Japanese elements with the comforts of modern design.
Main Building: Choose from Japanese-Western rooms with open-air baths, fully barrier-free suites, and standard tatami rooms. Some rooms also include indoor baths for added privacy.
Annex Yukatei: This luxurious area offers a more exclusive stay. Relax in rooms with private gardens and open-air baths, and enjoy a higher level of privacy and tranquility throughout your stay.
Every room provides a quiet space where you can take in the seasonal beauty of Gero, including views of the nearby Mt. Gero Fuji.
Dining
Suihouen takes pride in its cuisine, offering meals that celebrate the seasons and local ingredients.
Dinner features the acclaimed “Yojo Kaiseki” course, which blends regional flavors with elegant presentation. Signature ingredients include award-winning Gin-no-Mikazuki rice and Hida beef, known for its marbling and tenderness. You can enjoy your meal in a private room, allowing you to savor each dish in peace.
In the morning, start your day with dishes like freshly made dashimaki tamago, warm rice from Gifu, and Hida’s specialty, hoba miso. Every item on your breakfast tray reflects the care and pride Suihouen puts into your experience.
For something extra, you can try Steak Kangetsu, the ryokan’s own restaurant. Here, the chef grills Hida beef in front of you on a custom iron and lava stone grill, blending Japanese tradition with a hint of Italian flair.
Onsen and Wellness
Gero Onsen is known as a “hot spring for beauty,” and Suihouen lets you enjoy it in several ways:
- Large Public Baths: The Yume-no-Yu and Bijin-no-Yu baths offer alkaline, colorless spring water that feels smooth on the skin. These indoor baths provide a soothing environment to soak your body and relax your mind.
- Scenic Open-Air Baths: Enjoy sweeping views of Gero and Mt. Gero Fuji as you soak in the Tono-no-Yu or Hime-no-Yu outdoor baths. The views alone are worth the visit.
- Private Baths: You can reserve the Mutsumi-no-Yu bath, which includes both an indoor and open-air bath. This space is filled with negative ions and fine bubbles that enhance relaxation.
- Exclusive Yukatei Bath: If you’re staying in the Yukatei annex, you have access to the Muso-no-Yu bath—a private facility available any time during your stay.
Guests with tattoos
If you have tattoos, you can use the private bath areas. These options let you relax without any concerns and still enjoy the full onsen experience.
