Overview

Step into a space where tradition meets healing. At Yurara Marukyo, you stay in a ryokan that honors its roots in charcoal making while offering comfort designed to calm your body and mind. Located in Kinugawa Onsen, this quiet retreat limits stays to those over school age, allowing for a focused, restful experience. From the moment you arrive, the warm hospitality and natural materials create a calm rhythm that mirrors your own.

Accommodation

Every room at Yurara Marukyo is inspired by the rhythm of the week. The design, lighting, and layout reflect different energies—from the peaceful clarity of “Ruri,” to the earthy calm of “Tsuchi,” and the refreshing spirit of “Sui.”

You can choose from Japanese-style, Western-style, or combined rooms. Some rooms include open-air baths with natural hot spring water and reclining beds to enhance your rest. The “Ruri” room, for example, evokes the purifying qualities of water and includes modern comforts like a smart TV, air purifier, and even a nano-steamer for skincare.

All rooms include natural charcoal decor that quietly enhances air quality and comfort. You’ll find yukata, loungewear, a full range of amenities, and eco-conscious touches throughout. This ryokan invites you to rest with intention and awaken refreshed.

Dining

At Yurara Marukyo, you eat with the seasons. The ryokan’s signature meal, called “○Kyozen,” is built around the idea of “eating the week.” Each dish reflects the mood of a day—”Moon” for elegance, “Fire” for warmth, “Wood” for nature, and more.

These meals feature local ingredients, often from the surrounding Tochigi region. The chefs prepare each course to highlight balance, taste, and nourishment. You’ll enjoy subtle presentations and flavors that tell the story of the land and the time of year.

Breakfast includes a complete “magowayasashii” spread, focusing on balanced, handmade dishes using traditional Japanese ingredients known for their nutritional value. If you have allergies or dietary needs, the staff can accommodate you with advance notice.

For a more intimate experience, dine in your room or reserve a private dining space in “Gohan-dokoro Nanoka,” where each room includes handcrafted paper lighting and seasonal decorations that bring warmth to your meal.

Onsen and Wellness

Soak in the natural hot spring water enhanced by charcoal minerals. At Yurara Marukyo’s Sumizumi no Yu, the spring water flows through charcoal, adding calcium and magnesium that leave your skin feeling soft and smooth.

You can enjoy indoor and open-air baths from afternoon into the late night and again in the early morning. Sit quietly and listen to the mountain breeze and gentle sounds of nature while the warmth of the spring water reaches deep into your body.

After your bath, hydrate with complimentary hydrogen water, believed to help with digestion, detox, and skin clarity. The space around the baths is also thoughtfully arranged with lighting and seating that promote deep relaxation.

Guests with Tattoos

The ryokan does not list any restrictions on tattoos. If you’re unsure, ask the front desk or choose a room with a private bath to ensure privacy.

Facilities

Yurara Marukyo houses only 16 rooms, giving you an intimate experience. Each area is decorated with artful charcoal installations—from bamboo to binchotan—and features spaces for quiet reading or rest.

You can browse local items and charcoal-inspired products in the gift shop located in the first-floor lobby. If you’re driving, the ryokan has space for up to 30 vehicles.

The ryokan welcomes you with natural materials, warm lighting, and subtle touches that bring a nostalgic yet fresh feeling to the entire stay.

Activities

Take your time exploring the ryokan’s many relaxing spaces. Enjoy quiet reading in the lobby, gaze at the seasonal colors outside your window, or walk around Kinugawa’s peaceful streets.

You can also enhance your stay with optional meals, drinks, and sake tasting. If you’re staying in a room with a private open-air bath, enjoy your evening soak followed by in-room dining for the ultimate relaxed experience.
