Manza Onsen

Manza Onsen is a mountain hot spring area in Gunma Prefecture, set high in the uplands of Joshinetsu Kogen National Park. The setting feels remote and elemental, with open views, cool air, and the unmistakable scent of sulfur drifting through the steam. It is best known for its strongly sulfurous waters, a defining feature that gives the baths their distinct atmosphere.

Rather than a busy hot spring town, Manza Onsen is more a small cluster of inns and bathing facilities shaped by its alpine surroundings. People come as much for the landscape as for the baths: in warmer months, the roads and slopes open onto broad mountain scenery, while winter brings deep snow and a quieter, more secluded mood.
