Overview
At Manza Onsen Nisshinkan, you stay high in the mountains of Gunma, in Manza Onsen at about 1,800 meters above sea level. The setting gives you cool highland air, wide natural scenery, and one of Japan’s most distinctive milky sulfur hot springs. This is a classic hot spring retreat for soaking, resting, and slowing your pace far from the city.
The ryokan places wellness at the center of the stay, with natural hot spring bathing, healthy meals, light activity programs, and quiet time in the mountain environment. You can come for a short onsen escape, a longer hot spring stay, or a nature-focused trip through the Joshinetsu Kogen area.
Accommodation
You can choose from Japanese-style rooms, Western-style rooms, and Japanese-Western rooms across the main building, annex, Yubo building, Mori no Yakata, and Yukemuri building.
Main Building Japanese Room keeps you close to the front desk, lobby, large bath “Choju no Yu,” and main dining room “Komakusa.” It suits you well when you want easy movement through the ryokan.
Main Building Western Room offers a twin-bed layout in the main building. With only two rooms in this category, each has its own design, and you stay near the dining room and baths.
Main Building Special Room gives you a corner-room stay with a strong view from the third floor. A raised kotatsu adds a relaxed Japanese touch, making this room a good choice when you want a more memorable stay.
Mori no Yakata Western Room features twin beds, wood warmth, and a spacious desk. This room reopened after renewal on December 27, 2025.
Annex Japanese Room gives you a simple Japanese-style stay with convenient access to both the main building and the “Manten no Yu” bath in the Yubo building. It also works well for longer hot spring stays.
Annex Western Room is a twin-bed room with a simple layout and toilet. It is one of the more affordable room choices with this setup.
Yubo Japanese-Western Room combines twin beds with a tatami area, so you can enjoy both bed comfort and a Japanese-style place to sit and relax. It also includes a shower room.
Yubo Special Japanese-Western Room gives you the most spacious room type listed for the ryokan, with twin beds, a tatami area, a corner-room view, and a bathroom. It suits a special occasion or a stay where you want extra space.
Yubo Japanese Room places you close to “Manten no Yu,” with a quieter feeling due to less foot traffic.
Yubo Japanese Room 8 Tatami is a simple room option designed for long hot spring stays and solo travel. It does not include a private toilet.
Yukemuri Building Japanese Room is listed as another Japanese-style room choice for your stay.
Dining
Dinner lets you choose between a buffet and kaiseki-style dining, depending on your plan. The dinner buffet changes with the season and market supply, with Japanese, Western, and Chinese dishes across about 40 items. At the open kitchen, you can enjoy teppanyaki such as Yamato pork or domestic diced steak on a rotating basis. Dessert includes make-your-own dorayaki and Tsumagoi milk soft-serve.
For a slower dinner, you can choose the kaiseki meal “Shirane,” made with seasonal selected ingredients and served at raised seating. Extra dishes may include dried amadai, sashimi, Joshu beef kawara steak, domestic horse sashimi, fruit, and seasonal crab options when available.
Breakfast is served buffet style. You can start the day with a popular seafood rice bowl made from 14 toppings such as salmon, tuna, and scallops. You can also enjoy health-focused dishes, Gunma’s local okkirikomi udon, black-rice okowa, and freshly baked waffles from the open kitchen.
Onsen and Wellness
The onsen is the heart of Nisshinkan. Manza Onsen is known for milky, cloudy sulfur water, natural spring flow, and a high-altitude setting inside Joshinetsu Kogen National Park. The ryokan uses naturally emerging spring water and has access to about 700 liters per minute from its source.
You can enjoy three main bathing areas. Choju no Yu is a large wooden indoor bath area with several bathing styles, including “Ubayu,” a 100% source-water bath with a strong sulfur character, “Nigayu,” the largest wooden tub at the ryokan, “Takiyu,” where hot spring water falls like a cascade, and “Mayu,” a bath warmed with hot spring heat but made from Manza spring water rather than onsen water.
Gokurakuyu is an open-air bath where you can soak while looking toward the mountains, sunrise, sunset, or the night sky. From May 11 to August 8, 2026, this bath runs on a gender-rotation schedule due to renovation work.
Manten no Yu is a scenic bath in the Yubo building, with natural hinoki wood and large windows framing the seasonal mountain view. You can also reserve Enman no Yu, a private family bath with cloudy, free-flowing spring water and the scent of hinoki.
Guests with Tattoos
Because you can soak in a private onsen inside selected room types, you can enjoy the onsen regardless of tattoos.
For the public bath, if you have tattoos, check with the hotel directly before using the shared bathing areas.
Facilities
You can spend time around the renewed lobby and front desk, where the ryokan also holds a nightly culture live show. The on-site Cafe & Bar Tsumakoi opened in April 2024, and the souvenir shop Minoriya sells original items and Manza Onsen products.
Dining takes place at Komakusa, the main buffet dining room. The ryokan also has banquet rooms such as Tsutsuji, Kikyo no Ma, and Nanakamado no Ma, plus the multi-purpose hall Shion no Izumi for health programs, talks, chapel time, and meetings. Yamayuri can be used for small meetings or private meals by consultation.
You can also visit the Manza Onsen history corner, which displays items connected to Nisshinkan’s history and early ski culture.
Activities
Around the ryokan, you can enjoy the nature of the Joshinetsu Kogen area. Nearby places listed for sightseeing include Yumiike Wetland, Tsumagoi Farm, Zazenso Park, Kusatsu Onsen’s yumomi show, Kita-Karuizawa’s fire festival, Nozori Lake, and waterfalls such as Kaminari-daki.
Some famous nearby mountain routes are currently restricted. Shirane-san Yugama and the Motoshirane-san walking trail are listed as unavailable due to volcanic activity, so you should avoid planning your trip around those spots unless access changes.
Inside the ryokan, you can join health programs, chapel time, early morning walks, snowshoe tours, and the nightly culture live show when available.
