Overview

Yumoto Choza brings you into the mountain world of Fukuchi Onsen in Okuhida, Gifu. You stay in a ryokan shaped by old Japanese farmhouse culture, with thick wooden beams, polished doors, irori hearths, and a warm countryside mood. The building reflects the owner’s love of old minka houses, including farmhouses more than 150 years old, recreated as a place where history, travel, and Japanese living come together.

After a bath, you can gather by the hearth and enjoy the slow rhythm of Okuhida. The surrounding area also makes this a strong base for mountain travel, with Kamikochi, Shinhotaka Ropeway, Norikura, and rail mountain biking listed as nearby highlights.

Accommodation

Yumoto Choza’s rooms focus on natural wood, tatami, hearthside warmth, and the feeling of an old Japanese country house. Each room type has its own character, so you can choose a stay that feels close to the Okuhida landscape.

Keyaki no Ie gives you a Japanese-style room with an irori hearth and a hinoki indoor bath. This is the best choice when you want the most private bathing experience in your own room.

Matsu no Ie combines a Japanese-style room with an irori hearth and a twin-bed room, making it a comfortable option when you prefer beds while still enjoying a traditional setting.

Kiri no Ie offers a Japanese-style room with an irori hearth, giving you the classic Yumoto Choza atmosphere of tatami, wood, and firelight.

Kuri no Ie and Tochi no Ie are Japanese-style rooms with hibachi braziers, creating a quiet, grounded space for resting after your bath or mountain outing.

Nara no Ie is a simple Japanese-style room, suited to a stay focused on hot springs, seasonal food, and the calm pace of Fukuchi Onsen.

Dining

Your meal centers on sanya ryori, mountain-country cuisine served around the irori hearth. You taste the character of Okuhida through seasonal ingredients from the wider Hida area, with a focus on local sourcing and mountain plants gathered by people who know the land well. At times, the cooks also go into the mountains themselves to find ingredients.

Dinner plans may include the standard plan, an A5-grade Hida beef sirloin plan, or a Hida beef sukiyaki plan. Extra dishes listed include iwana sashimi, rare Hida beef steak, and assorted wild vegetable tempura.

Onsen and Wellness

Fukuchi Onsen has a long hot spring history, and Yumoto Choza draws on source waters connected to the volcanic foothills of Yakedake and Norikuradake. The large public bath uses sodium bicarbonate spring water, while Kawara no Yu uses sodium chloride bicarbonate spring water.

You can enjoy four main bathing styles: the large public bath with open-air bath, the private open-air Sanyaso no Yu, the detached private open-air baths of Shizuku no Yu, and Kawara no Yu by the river. The large indoor bath uses wooden tubs made from logs cut from the ryokan’s back mountain, with water kept at a gentle temperature for slow soaking.

For more privacy, you can use three free private bath rooms with open-air baths when available, without advance reservation. Shizuku no Yu has five detached private open-air baths in the trees, while Kawara no Yu places you by the sound of the river, birds, and wind.

Guests with Tattoos

Because you can soak in a private onsen inside selected room types, you can enjoy the onsen regardless of tattoos. For the public bath, if you have tattoos, check with the hotel directly before using the shared bathing areas.
