Overview

You reach Poetical at an elevation of around 1,500 metres in Norikura Kogen, within Chubu-Sangaku National Park. Forests, mountain air, and the slopes of Mount Norikura surround this small, family-run pension, giving you an inviting base for hiking, winter sports, sightseeing, and long hot spring soaks.

The experience centres on two simple pleasures: homemade food and milky-white sulfur water drawn directly from Norikura Kogen Onsen. There is no formal resort atmosphere here. Instead, you settle into the warmth of a personal mountain inn where meals are prepared by hand, baths are enjoyed privately, and the pace follows the changing seasons.

Summer brings cooler temperatures and green mountain scenery, while winter covers the highlands in deep snow. After spending the day outdoors, you can return to a home-cooked dinner, soak in a private onsen, and relax beside the wood-burning stove.

Accommodation

You can choose from Western-style twin and triple rooms, rooms with loft sleeping areas, a spacious deluxe room, a traditional Japanese room, and two rooms prepared for stays with pets. Each room has its own character, with some facing the morning sun and others looking toward the nearby mountain slopes.

The twin and triple rooms provide comfortable beds with a bench or sofa for sitting between outings. Selected rooms have east-facing windows with plenty of daylight, while the west-facing triple room places the mountain scenery close to your window.

The loft rooms work especially well when you travel with family or friends. Beds sit on the main floor, while futons can be prepared in the loft above. One loft room receives light from windows on two sides, while the other looks toward the mountain.

The deluxe room is the largest option at Poetical. A high ceiling, generous floor space, and windows facing south and west create an open setting where you can rest comfortably after hiking or skiing. The room can be arranged with up to four beds.

For a more traditional stay, the ten-tatami Japanese room gives you space to stretch out on the floor and sleep on futons. It suits you particularly well when you prefer tatami or travel with children.

Two first-floor rooms allow you to stay with a pet. Tanpopo has direct outdoor access and can accommodate larger dogs, while Yamazakura combines beds on the lower floor with a small tatami mezzanine above. Pet food, toilet sheets, and other supplies are not provided, so you should bring the items normally used at home.

Most rooms include a private toilet and washbasin, while selected rooms have a compact unit bath. Every room has a television, electric kettle, humidifier or air purifier, and a heat-exchange ventilation system that allows continued ventilation during Norikura’s cold months.

Your room also includes bath towels, face towels, cups, and a tea set. Yukata, hairdryers, and razors are available from the second-floor hallway when needed.

Dining

Dinner changes between Japanese, Western, and Chinese menus, allowing you to enjoy a different style depending on the day. Seasonal produce and ingredients from the local area bring the flavors of Shinshu into each meal.

A Western dinner is served as a course and may begin with an assortment of appetizers, followed by soup, fish, meat, and dessert. The Chinese menu focuses on generous, satisfying dishes, while the Japanese menu places local and seasonal ingredients at the centre of the meal.

You can also arrange additional regional specialties in advance, including Shinshu beef, horse sashimi, and grilled iwana river fish. An anniversary cake can be prepared when requested before your stay.

In the morning, you choose between a Japanese or Western breakfast. The Japanese option includes a comforting rice porridge set, while the Western breakfast features homemade bread and homemade jam. You select your breakfast style and preferred time on the previous evening.

Advance notice is required when you have allergies or ingredients you cannot eat. Menus can be adjusted where possible, although vegetarian and vegan meals may not always be available at this small family-run property. Baby food, children’s plates, and smaller portions can also be arranged before arrival.

Onsen and Wellness

Poetical draws its hot spring water from Norikura Kogen Onsen. This natural sulfur spring runs directly from the source and turns a distinctive milky white after coming into contact with the air.

The water has a clear sulfur character and a slightly lower bathing temperature, allowing you to soak without feeling rushed. Despite the gentler temperature, the water leaves your body feeling thoroughly warmed. Bathing indications include sensitivity to cold, muscle discomfort, difficulty sleeping, and some long-term skin conditions.

Rather than entering a large communal bath, you use each bathing area privately with your partner, family, or travelling companions. Reservations and fixed time limits are not used. You simply enter when a bath becomes available, although you may need to wait during busier periods.

From spring through autumn, you can choose between three private bathing areas. Manten no Yu combines a round indoor tub with a small open-air bath. Koharu no Yu has a slightly larger indoor tub, while Setsuka no Yu gives you a more open outdoor bathing experience surrounded by the highland air.

During winter, the layout changes to two private bathing areas because an outdoor-only bath would be difficult to use in Norikura’s deep cold. Manten no Yu continues to offer its indoor and small outdoor baths, while Koharu no Yu combines the larger indoor tub with the more spacious open-air bath.

The baths are not designed on the scale of a large resort. Their appeal comes from the private setting, free-flowing sulfur water, and the chance to soak together without watching the clock.

Guests with Tattoos

All hot spring baths at Poetical are used privately rather than as shared, gender-separated bathing areas. You can therefore enjoy the onsen with tattoos without entering a communal bath.

The baths do not use advance reservations. You enter with your travelling companions when your chosen bathing area is free.

Facilities

The playroom gives you a warm shared space for slow evenings and snowy days. A wood-burning stove provides the main heating on the first floor, creating a comfortable place to sit after dinner or after returning from the baths.

You can browse books and manga or spend time playing board games and card games. Toys are also available for younger children, making the shared space easy to enjoy as a family.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building. Indoor areas are non-smoking, with a covered smoking place provided on the balcony.

Free parking is available in front of the pension, with one space provided for each room. During busy periods, you may be directed to an unpaved parking space among the trees nearby.

Activities

Mount Norikura rises above the surrounding highlands and gives you access to hiking, alpine scenery, and high-elevation nature. The bus stop for seasonal transport toward Tatamidaira is around a ten-minute walk from Poetical. From Tatamidaira, you can explore alpine flower fields, search for rock ptarmigans, or continue toward the summit during the climbing season.

You can also visit the three waterfalls of Norikura Kogen: Sanbondaki, Zengoro Falls, and Bandokoro Falls. Sanbondaki brings three separate streams together in one dramatic setting and is recognised as one of Japan’s notable waterfalls.

Kamikochi is also within reach for a day trip. You can drive to the Sawando bus terminal and continue by shuttle bus because private cars cannot enter Kamikochi. From the bus centre, riverside paths lead toward Kappa Bridge and the surrounding mountain scenery.

In winter, the highlands offer skiing, snowboarding, snowshoe walking, and snow-covered forest trails. After a day in the cold, you can return to Poetical for a private sulfur bath and dinner beside the warmth of the wood stove.

Additional Features

Poetical welcomes children and provides toys, board games, highchairs, and a Japanese-style room suited to family stays. Beds can be moved together where possible, while baby food and children’s meals can be prepared with advance notice. Children’s yukata and sleepwear are not provided, so you should bring your own.

Selected rooms allow you to stay with dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, and other pets. Pets must remain in the designated first-floor rooms, and larger dogs should use Tanpopo because it has direct access from outside. You should bring familiar bedding, food, toilet sheets, and other daily supplies.

The pension sits about 55 minutes by car from the Matsumoto Interchange. When travelling by public transport, you can take the railway from Matsumoto to Shin-Shimashima and continue by bus toward Norikura Kogen.

Winter driving requires careful preparation. The final approach includes a steep section of around 80 metres, and snow tyres or chains may be necessary. Four-wheel-drive vehicles with winter tyres offer the easiest access during heavy snow, while two-wheel-drive vehicles may require chains.
