Overview

Shionoyu Onsen Rengetsu brings you down into Shiobara Valley, where the ryokan sits beside a mountain stream below a drop of about 30 meters. The arrival itself feels special: after reaching the parking and slope-car area, you ride the private slope car down toward the main building, with the valley opening around you.

This is a strong choice when you want a private hot spring stay in nature without giving up the comfort of a full-service ryokan. Every room has a natural hot spring bath, and the property also offers a large shared bath, three free private open-air baths, sauna, bedrock bathing, seasonal kaiseki dining, a library, massage spaces, and post-bath treats. The sound of the stream, the valley views, and the private bathing setup shape the whole stay.

Accommodation

Rengetsu has 88 non-smoking rooms, with nine room types across the main building and detached rooms. Every room includes a natural hot spring bath, but the bath style differs by room type. Some rooms have open-air baths, while others have indoor baths.

In the main building, the Twin, Deluxe Twin, and Four rooms include open-air hot spring baths and look toward the surrounding nature. Twin rooms suit two people, Deluxe Twin rooms add more flexibility for three or four people, and Four rooms give you separate sleeping and living space for up to four people. The Japanese-Western rooms and Universal Room have indoor hot spring baths, giving you more interior space and easier movement.

The detached rooms give you more privacy away from the main building. Detached Twin, Deluxe Twin, and Four rooms have indoor hot spring baths, while the detached Maisonette rooms include open-air hot spring baths and a two-level layout. The Maisonette is the most spacious option, with bedrooms on different floors and garden-style views from the living area and bath.

Rooms include useful basics such as Wi-Fi, air conditioning, refrigerator, TV, humidifying air purifier, washlet toilet, safe, kettle, tea set, coffee mill, samue roomwear, towels, bath items, hair dryer, and toiletries. All rooms are non-smoking, with smoking limited to designated areas.

Dining

Dining at Rengetsu focuses on seasonal Japanese kaiseki made with local Nasushiobara ingredients. Dinner is served at Hanakagari, the third-floor dining room, where each table area has a semi-private booth setting and large windows facing the mountains.

Dinner is served in two time slots, depending on the stay plan. The meal brings together seasonal ingredients, carefully prepared dishes, and the colors of the time of year. The style is refined but still easy to enjoy, with the calm rhythm of a hot spring ryokan meal.

Breakfast is a Japanese-style meal served in the same dining area. It gives you a gentle start before another bath, a valley walk, or sightseeing around Shiobara.

Rengetsu also serves the Kyoritsu Resort late-night Yonaki Soba service. After dinner and bathing, you can enjoy a light soy sauce ramen during the late evening service time.

Low-allergen menus can be arranged with advance notice. Requests need to be made before arrival, and the available menu style follows the ryokan’s current allergy policy.

Onsen and Wellness

Rengetsu uses Kariko no Yu, a natural hot spring with a source temperature of 50°C. The spring quality is sodium chloride spring water, classified as neutral and hypotonic. It is associated with support for neuralgia, rheumatic discomfort, cold sensitivity, skin concerns, fatigue recovery, and general health promotion.

The large shared bath, Yamaga no Yu, includes indoor baths, open-air baths, a medicinal seated bath, silky bath, sauna, bedrock bath, and cold bath. The shared bath area is open from afternoon through the next morning, with a short late-night cleaning period. Sauna and bedrock bath hours are separate.

Three free private open-air baths are also available: Saiun, Soun, and Koun. These baths are not reservation-based. You check the sign at the entrance and use an available bath on a first-come basis, usually for around 30 to 40 minutes. The private baths are for soaking, so washing and hair washing should be done in your room bath or the large public bath.

Every room also has a natural hot spring bath, giving you private bathing whenever you want. This makes Rengetsu especially comfortable if you prefer repeated short soaks, quiet morning bathing, or a private bath after dinner.

After bathing, the post-bath area Kazenone serves ice pops in the evening and milk or Yakult in the morning, depending on service time and availability.

Guests with Tattoos

Rengetsu has shared public hot spring baths, three free private open-air baths, and natural hot spring baths in every room. Tattoos are not permitted in the shared large public bath. Use your in-room hot spring bath or one of the free private open-air baths for a private soak.

Facilities

Rengetsu has a private slope car, lobby, large shared bath, three private open-air baths, post-bath area Kazenone, esthetic salon BARAKA, dining room Hanakagari, library Hanagasumi, massage area Tsukikasumi, pillow selection corners, souvenir shop Momiji, karaoke room, smoking areas, Wi-Fi, parking, and shuttle support from the main parking area.

The slope car is part of the experience. Because the ryokan sits down in the valley, you first reach the parking and transfer area, then move by shuttle and slope car toward the building. Detached-room stays include nearby dedicated parking for one vehicle per room.

The library is open 24 hours and gives you a quiet place to read during your stay. The pillow corners on the room floors let you choose from different pillow materials. The souvenir shop carries local items, and the esthetic salon offers treatments from the afternoon until late evening by reservation.

Activities

Rengetsu is best enjoyed slowly. You can spend most of your time moving between your room bath, the private open-air baths, the large bath, the library, and the dining room while listening to the stream and watching the valley change through the day.

The Shiobara area also gives you nature and hot spring town sightseeing. You can visit valley viewpoints, waterfalls, suspension bridges, footbath spots, and seasonal foliage areas around Shiobara Onsen. In winter, the surrounding roads and mountain scenery bring a quieter snow-country feeling, while warmer months suit forest walks and riverside sightseeing.

Nasushiobara also works well for a wider trip that includes farms, highland drives, local museums, and Nasu-area attractions. After a day out, the private bath in your room makes it easy to return and relax without planning around a bath schedule.

Additional Features

Rengetsu is best for you if you want a valley-side ryokan with natural hot spring baths in every room, three free private open-air baths, a large shared bath, sauna, bedrock bath, kaiseki dining, Yonaki Soba, post-bath treats, a library, pillow selection, esthetic treatments, and a memorable slope-car arrival.

Stay times depend on the plan you choose. The early plan gives you check-in from 14:00, dinner at 17:30, and check-out by 10:00. The later plan gives you check-in from 16:00, dinner at 20:00, and check-out by 12:00. You also have free Wi-Fi, all non-smoking rooms, parking with shuttle access, dedicated parking for detached rooms, gift and cake ordering options, and shuttle service from JR Nasushiobara Station by advance reservation.
