Overview

Futarishizuka Hakuun places you on a wooded hillside above Takayama, with wide views across the town and easy access to its historic streets. The entrance stands beside Shiroyama Park, while Takayama’s old town is about 5 minutes away on foot.

This setting gives you the best of both sides of Takayama. You can spend the day exploring wooden merchant houses, morning markets, sake breweries, and local food shops, then return to a quieter part of town for hot spring bathing and Hida beef cuisine.

Traditional interiors, town views, cypress baths, and attentive service create a classic ryokan experience without taking you far from the main sightseeing area.

Accommodation

Every room at Futarishizuka Hakuun has its own layout and character. Options include compact Japanese rooms for two, larger 10-tatami rooms for groups of up to six, and a Japanese-Western room with a separate bedroom.

Many rooms include a private cypress or ceramic bath with views toward Takayama or the surrounding trees. These standard in-room baths do not use hot spring water.

For a private onsen experience, choose the 8-tatami Special Room with an open-air hot spring bath. This is the only room with its own natural hot spring supply. The bath faces the mountains and includes an outdoor seating area where you can rest after soaking.

Other special rooms feature semi-open-air baths with wide views across Takayama. These baths use heated water rather than natural hot spring water.

Room facilities include free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and heating, a television, refrigerator, washlet toilet, yukata, towels, toiletries, and a safe. All rooms have been non-smoking since October 2025, with smoking limited to the designated outdoor area.

Dining

Dinner celebrates Hida beef, one of Gifu’s best-known regional ingredients. Depending on your selected plan, you can enjoy it as steak, hoba miso steak, shabu-shabu, roast beef, simmered beef, or lightly seared sushi.

Seasonal sashimi, grilled fish, vegetables, small dishes, rice, miso soup, and dessert complete the meal. The menu changes through the year so that each course reflects the season as well as the food culture of Hida.

Several dinner plans are available. The standard course combines Hida beef with seafood and seasonal dishes, while upgraded plans place even more focus on the beef. Additional Hida beef dishes and local sake tasting sets can be arranged in advance.

Dinner is served in a private dining room or a larger tatami dining hall, depending on the plan and arrangements for the day. Breakfast is a Japanese set meal centred on Takayama-style hoba miso, served warm over a small tabletop grill.

Onsen and wellness

Two large bathing areas overlook Takayama and the surrounding mountains. The men’s and women’s sides switch between the evening and morning, allowing you to experience both during an overnight visit.

The spacious indoor cypress baths use weakly alkaline Hida Takayama Onsen water. The spring is clear, colourless, and mild, with a soft feel on the skin. The barrel baths beside the large baths use heated water rather than natural hot spring water.

Bathing hours are from 15:00 to 23:00 and from 6:00 to 9:00.

A private open-air bath is also available in a separate building. It overlooks Takayama and includes its own relaxation area. Each session lasts 40 minutes (fees apply). Reservations are accepted at the front desk after arrival, with no advance booking. This private bath uses heated water rather than hot spring water.

For natural onsen water in complete privacy, choose the Special Room with its own open-air hot spring bath.

Guests with tattoos

If you have tattoos, you can use the private rental open-air bath. Tattoos are accepted in this private bathing space, although the bath uses heated water rather than natural onsen water.

For a private natural hot spring experience, choose the Special Room with its own open-air onsen bath.

Facilities

The first-floor lobby lounge gives you broad views across Takayama, from the daylight townscape to the lights that appear after sunset. An observation terrace offers another place to enjoy the view, and Mount Haku may be visible in the distance on clear days.

Free Wi-Fi is available in the rooms, and complimentary parking is provided outside the ryokan. The parking area sits on a slope, reflecting the property’s hillside position.

Paid services include massages, mahjong, and banquet facilities. Celebration cakes and flower arrangements can also be prepared for an additional charge when requested in advance.

Activities

Takayama’s old town is about 5 minutes away on foot, making it easy to explore early in the morning or return for an evening walk. The historic streets are lined with wooden buildings that now house craft shops, restaurants, cafés, sake breweries, and stores selling local food.

Takayama Jinya is about 7 minutes away on foot. This former government complex gives you a closer look at the town’s Edo-period history.

Miyagawa Morning Market is about 10 minutes away on foot, where you can browse local vegetables, fruit, pickles, crafts, and regional products. You can also sample Takayama favourites such as soy-sauce-grilled mitarashi dango, Hida beef sushi, and Takayama ramen.

Hida Folk Village is about 13 minutes away by car and displays traditional houses and working buildings moved from across the Hida region.
