Overview

Kamome-so gives you a gentle island stay near Ogi Port, on the southern side of Sado Island. You arrive about 10 minutes on foot from the port, then ease into a ryokan shaped by local seafood, natural hot spring water, and the quieter pace of a port town. This is the kind of place where you can let the day slow down: soak, eat, walk, sleep, and let Sado set the rhythm.

The name Kamome-so comes from a scene seen by an earlier owner. Seagulls used to rest on the small island in front of the inn, and that image inspired the wish for travelers to rest just as peacefully. That feeling still runs through the stay today: unforced, local, and close to the sea.

Accommodation

You stay in a Japanese-style room with tatami flooring and a calm, unfussy layout. Room choices include 8-tatami Japanese-style rooms, some with bath and toilet; 10-tatami Japanese-style rooms with toilet; and Japanese-style rooms with beds. This gives you a choice between a more traditional futon stay and a room where you can sleep in a bed while still keeping the ryokan atmosphere.

The rooms keep things comfortable and practical. You have yukata, bath towels, towels, a tea set, and an electric kettle, along with basic amenities such as shampoo, rinse, body soap, toothbrush set, and towels. Kamome-so has 11 Japanese-style rooms in total, with 3 rooms that include both bath and toilet.

The building adds a little surprise to the stay. From the outside, you see a distinctive triangular-roof structure; inside, the ryokan brings together Japanese warmth and a brighter, more open design. The building has earned recognition in an architectural competition, so you feel a touch of design character without losing the comfort of a small island inn.

Dining

Dinner at Kamome-so follows the sea. Because the ryokan sits close to Ogi Port, the kitchen can use seafood landed locally and ingredients that reflect the season. The menu changes with the day’s catch, so your meal feels connected to Sado itself rather than fixed or predictable.

You dine in a private dining room, where table seating lets you relax without sitting on the floor. The evening meal centers on seafood and local ingredients, with dishes that may include fresh sashimi and seasonal fish. Optional sashimi dishes can feature local fish such as okoze when available, though the exact fish changes with the season and landing conditions. Sado local sake is also available, making dinner feel even more rooted in the island.

Breakfast is served in a separate dining room with a bright morning feel. The rice comes from the Hamochi area in southern Sado, where water from the Hamochi River supports rice growing. It is a simple, satisfying way to start the day before sightseeing, cycling, or a slow walk around Ogi.

Onsen and Wellness

Kamome-so’s bath is Ogi Onsen, a 100% free-flowing natural hot spring with no added water. The spring has a high alkaline pH of 9.6 and is known locally as “Bijin no Yu,” or beauty water, for its smooth feel on the skin. The spring quality is sodium-calcium sulfate and chloride, with a source temperature of 43.8°C.

The indoor bath has a high ceiling and warm wooden finishes, giving you an open, restful place to soak. Plenty of hot spring water flows into the tub, so you can enjoy the source-fed water at an easy pace after travel, sightseeing, or time by the coast.

The open-air bath is built with natural stone and brings in the scent of the sea breeze. On clear nights, you can soak while looking up at Sado’s starry sky. The open-air bath closes from early December to early March, but the indoor bath remains available during bathing hours.

Bathing times for overnight stays are 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM to midnight. The sauna is available from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and the bath area also includes a jet bath. Day-use bathing is available from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM

Facilities

Kamome-so has 11 Japanese-style rooms, a large hot spring bath, open-air baths for men and women, a sauna, a jet bath, vending machines, paid coin laundry, and dining spaces for dinner and breakfast. Dinner is served in the private Japanese-style dining room “Nagomi,” while breakfast is served in a brighter dining room with table seating. The ryokan also has a banquet hall, meeting room, delivery service, fax service, bicycle rental, and on-site parking.

The building is easy to settle into, with an entrance slope and a partly single-story layout, though full barrier-free support is not provided. Wi-Fi is available in the lobby area, and pets are not accepted.

Activities

Kamome-so makes a good base for exploring Ogi. Near Ogi Port, you can ride Sado’s famous tarai-bune tub boats and let a local boatwoman guide you across the water. Shukunegi, the preserved village tied to Sado’s old shipbuilding and shipping history, is about 8 minutes away by car.

If you want a more active day, Sado Long Ride offers cycling routes of 40 km, 100 km, 130 km, and 210 km around the island. You can also visit Sado Gold Mine, Sado Nishimikawa Gold Park, and Toki Forest Park as part of your island route.

Additional features

Check-in is from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and check-out is by 10:00 AM. Some plans allow final check-in until 9:00 PM, which helps if you want to keep exploring before arriving. You can choose stays with dinner and breakfast, breakfast only, or room only, depending on how you want to travel around Sado.

Kamome-so suits you if you want a ryokan that feels local rather than polished for show. You come here for source-fed hot spring water, fresh seafood from Sado, easy access to Ogi Port, and the kind of island quiet that feels best after a long soak.
