Overview

Tennen Onsen Habutae-no-Yu Dormy Inn PREMIUM Fukui sits in central Fukui City, about seven minutes on foot from JR Fukui Station and roughly 22 minutes by car from the Fukui Interchange. The name Habutae refers to habutae silk, a lightweight, lustrous fabric that Fukui Prefecture has been producing for centuries and for which the region is nationally celebrated.

This is a city-centre hotel built around two things: a quality night’s sleep and a genuine natural hot spring soak. It suits travellers who want a well-placed, well-equipped base in Fukui without trading comfort for convenience. The hotel also leans into Fukui’s identity as Japan’s dinosaur kingdom, with dinosaur-themed decor placed throughout the lobby, entrance, and public areas, a nod to the fossils discovered across the prefecture and to the famous Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum.

Accommodation

The hotel has 189 rooms across double, twin, and queen room types. Every room comes with a Simmons pocket coil mattress, a duck-down duvet, and the hotel’s original three-dimensional pillow. Rooms also include a flat-screen TV, air conditioning, a refrigerator, free Wi-Fi, a safe, and tea and coffee-making facilities. The design is clean and functional, with separate shower and toilet areas in the bathroom.

Dining

Breakfast is served daily from 6:30 AM to 9:30 AM as a Japanese and Western buffet. The spread includes the chain’s standard kobachi yokocho selection of small side dishes, freshly made egg dishes, and a local Fukui specialty prepared each morning: Echizen oroshi soba, a cold buckwheat noodle dish served with grated daikon radish, one of the most iconic foods in Fukui Prefecture.

In the evenings, complimentary Yonaki Soba, the hotel’s signature late-night soy sauce ramen, is served nightly from 9:30 PM to 11:00 PM at the restaurant. The hotel also has a lounge. Welcome snacks and drinks are left in the room on arrival, including a local Fukui snack in the refrigerator.

Breakfast costs extra and must be added when booking. The restaurant does not serve lunch.

Onsen and Wellness

The natural hot spring baths sit on the 9th floor, the top floor of the building, with separate large baths for men and women. The outdoor bath on this floor looks directly out over the Asuwa River, a tributary of the Hino River in the Kuzuryu River system. From this vantage point you can watch cherry blossoms lining the riverbanks in spring and fireworks over the river in summer. Small dinosaur fossil-inspired objects are placed within the bathing area as a further nod to Fukui’s character.

The natural hot spring water is drawn from the ground and flows into the large indoor baths. Both bathing areas include a sauna and are open from 3:00 PM until 10:00 AM the following morning, giving you the option to soak late at night or early in the morning.

After bathing, complimentary ice cream, Yakult, and drinks are available in the bathing area.

Guests with Tattoos

Guests with tattoos are not permitted to use the baths.

Facilities

The hotel is well equipped for both short stays and longer visits. The 9th-floor natural hot spring baths with open-air area overlooking the Asuwa River are the centrepiece, complemented by gender-separated saunas. Coin-operated laundry machines are available on site, and the restaurant serves breakfast and late-night soba. The lounge is open for drinks and snacks. Vending machines, an ice machine, a 24-hour front desk, and luggage storage are all on site. Free Wi-Fi runs throughout the property. On-site parking is available in a multi-storey car park, on a first-come basis with limited spaces.

Activities

Kitanosho Castle Park, built on the ruins of the former Kitanosho Castle, is a three-minute walk from the hotel and one of the most popular spring cherry blossom spots in Fukui. Sakaenoyashiro Shrine is about six minutes on foot. The Asuwa River, visible from the onsen, runs along a well-known sakura promenade that is particularly beautiful in early April.

The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum is the most visited attraction in the prefecture and one of the largest dinosaur museums in the world, located about 40 minutes from the hotel by car. Eiheiji Temple, one of the two head temples of Soto Zen Buddhism, is approximately 30 minutes away and a deeply atmospheric site worth a half-day visit. Awara Onsen, one of the major hot spring towns in the Hokuriku region, is about 20 minutes by train and makes for a good day trip.

Fukui is also known for Echizen crab, Echizen lacquerware, and the textile traditions tied to habutae silk. Local izakayas, ramen shops, and soba restaurants near the hotel give you easy access to regional food in the evenings.
