Overview
umori Onsen Hostel is a ryokan-style hot spring hostel in Tsuchiyu Onsen, Fukushima, at the base of Mt. Azuma and within the nature of Bandai-Asahi National Park. You stay in a relaxed onsen town setting with public and private hot spring baths, tatami rooms, dormitories, a shared kitchen, a lounge, and a café and bar. This is not a formal ryokan with full kaiseki service. It gives you a more flexible, social, and casual way to enjoy Tsuchiyu’s hot spring culture.
Tsuchiyu Onsen has a long history of more than 1,000 years and is known for hot springs, mountain scenery, riverside streets, and kokeshi doll culture. Yumori suits you when you want real onsen water, simple rooms, shared spaces, and the freedom to cook, talk, read, or soak at your own pace.
Accommodation
You can choose from six room types across 30 non-smoking rooms: Japanese Tatami Room, Bed & Tatami Room, Group Room, Family Room, Barrier-Free Room, Co-ed Dormitory Room, and Female Dormitory Room. All rooms include air conditioning and a toilet, and room types range from private tatami rooms to enclosed dormitory beds.
The Japanese Tatami Room starts from 32㎡ and gives you a classic tatami stay with free Wi-Fi, small fridge, TV, toilet, air conditioning, electric kettle, hair dryer, and shower room only. The Bed & Tatami Room combines two twin beds with a tatami corner, making it a good choice when you want both bed sleeping and Japanese-style floor space.
The Group Room is about twice the size of a standard tatami room and works well when you travel with family or friends. The Family Room has a living space, raised tatami sleeping area, kitchen, and a view of the town, making it especially useful for longer stays or self-catering.
The Barrier-Free Room gives you a wider suite-style layout with a kitchen, dining area, two semi-double beds, and a private cypress indoor bath using hot spring water flowing directly from the source. Fukushima City’s accessibility guide also notes that this room has a wheelchair-accessible restroom and source-fed cypress bath.
For a budget-friendly or social stay, you can choose the co-ed dormitory or women-only dormitory. Each dormitory has enclosed beds, privacy curtains, reading lights or small lights, power outlets, and safety storage. These rooms do not have private bathrooms, so you use the large communal bath or shared shower rooms
Dining
Yumori gives you flexible dining rather than a fixed ryokan meal schedule. You can use the shared kitchen, which has kitchen appliances, cutlery, plates, cups, and other basic items, so you only need to bring your ingredients. This works well when you want to cook, keep costs simple, or stay longer in Tsuchiyu.
The second-floor café and bar focuses on koji, or malted rice, drinks and dishes. You can enjoy coffee made with beans from Fukuei Coffee in Koriyama, original amazake drinks, craft beer, bikoji sandwiches, bikoji rice, soup sets, and house pickles. Café drinks are served during the day, lunch is available during midday service, and the bar opens from afternoon into the evening.
Breakfast is available by request through selected plans or arrangements, but this is not a full ryokan-style dining property with standard dinner included for every stay. If you want more food options, you can cook in the shared kitchen or explore Tsuchiyu Onsen’s local cafés and eating spots.
Onsen and Wellness
Yumori uses natural 60°C hot spring water and cools it to a comfortable bathing temperature by adding mountain spring water. The spring is a simple alkaline spring, and listed benefits include hypertension, arteriosclerosis, rheumatism, neuralgia, skin disease, women’s health concerns, and sensitivity to cold. Tsuchiyu Onsen is also known for smooth-feeling skin after bathing.
You can use the large public bath, which is filled with natural source water and also welcomes day-use bathers during set hours. The public bath gives you a spacious indoor soak with a simple, clean design and a forested view outside.
You can also reserve one of four private baths: Len, Ran, Kaede, and Tsubaki. Len and Ran are white-tiled indoor baths. Kaede is a cypress indoor bath and is wheelchair-accessible. Tsubaki has two baths, with indoor and outdoor bathing space. These private baths are useful when you want a quieter soak, family bathing, or more privacy.
Guests with Tattoos
Yumori Onsen Hostel is tattoo-friendly. Fukushima Travel lists the shared indoor baths and private baths as “Tattoos OK,” and Japan’s official travel site also describes Yumori’s public bath and private tubs as tattoo-friendly. You can use the public bath, or reserve a private bath when you want more privacy.
Facilities
Yumori is built around shared spaces that make the stay easy and social. The lounge gives you a place to talk, read, work, or rest between baths. The library corner has books in Japanese and English, including books connected to Tsuchiyu’s kokeshi culture. The shared kitchen lets you prepare your own meals with provided kitchen equipment, tableware, and cutlery.
The meeting room on the second floor can be divided into three sections and can be used for meetings, seminars, events, and music events. The café and bar adds another gathering space, with koji drinks, coffee, light meals, and craft beer.
Practical facilities include a 24-hour coin laundry, 24-hour shared shower rooms, a shared vanity room, rental towels, rental room wear, toothbrushes, razors, free earplugs for dormitory stays, luggage storage, vending machines, shared microwave, shared refrigerator, and free Wi-Fi. Parking is available on site, and a free shuttle from Fukushima Station can be arranged through sister property Sansuiso with advance contact.
Activities
You can enjoy Tsuchiyu Onsen at a slow pace from Yumori. Nearby walking spots include Kajika-no-Yu Foot Bath, Kibokko-no-Yu Foot Bath, Kumano Shrine, a suspension bridge, Arakawa Three Tiered Waterfall, and Matsuya Kokeshi Shop. These short outings let you experience the hot spring town without needing a packed schedule.
