Overview

CHIKUSENSO Mt. Zao Onsen Resort & Spa gives you a refined mountain stay in Togatta Onsen, at the foot of Mount Zao. The resort sits across about 66,000㎡ of natural grounds, with forest, streams, and seasonal mountain scenery shaping the experience from arrival to departure. It is a strong choice if you want a quiet hot spring retreat with space, privacy, and polished service.

The atmosphere is calm and elegant rather than overly formal. You can spend your time soaking in the baths, walking through the grounds, reading in the lounge, enjoying kaiseki dining, or simply taking in the view from your room. The resort has 30 rooms and combines Japanese design, natural materials, contemporary art, and onsen culture in a way that feels comfortable and carefully considered.

Accommodation

You can choose from VIP suites, suites, and deluxe rooms. VIP suites offer more than 100㎡ of space, with a living room, private outdoor onsen, and added privileges such as complimentary minibar drinks, coffee maker, Blu-ray player, and upgraded bedding.

Suites are 75㎡ and combine Japanese and Western design. Each suite includes its own private onsen, along with generous living space, mountain views, a coffee maker, complimentary minibar drinks, and quality bedding.

Deluxe rooms are 48㎡ and use natural materials with five design styles to choose from. These rooms suit you well if you want comfort, space, and a refined mountain-resort feel without booking a suite.

Dining

Dining centers on Japanese kaiseki at Kamajin, where you enjoy seasonal courses shaped by Miyagi’s natural ingredients. Dinner highlights local produce, seafood, and Sendai beef, prepared with careful technique and a creative touch.

Breakfast continues the focus on regional quality, including rice cooked in a sand pot and sourced directly from farms in the area. You can also pair meals with Miyagi wine or small-bottle sake, adding a local drinking experience to your dinner.

Onsen and Wellness

The hot spring water comes from Togatta Onsen, a historic source with more than 400 years of onsen culture. You can soak in indoor and open-air baths for men and women, or reserve one of two private outdoor baths. All suites also include private onsen baths, giving you more freedom to enjoy the water on your own schedule.

The spring water contains sodium compounds, bicarbonate, and sulfate. The source temperature is listed at 65.1°C, and the water is associated with relief for fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, cold sensitivity, and skin concerns.

For deeper relaxation, you can also book spa and relaxation treatments during your stay.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, the most comfortable option is to book a suite with a private onsen or reserve one of the two private outdoor baths. For use of the shared public baths, check directly with the resort before your stay.

Facilities

You have access to a full range of facilities designed to support a comfortable stay:

  • Japanese Restaurant Kamajin: Enjoy kaiseki dining in a refined restaurant with Japanese design details, including a gold-leaf ceiling and persimmon-dyed walls.
  • Bar: Relax with Japanese sake, wine, liquor, or non-alcoholic drinks in the evening.
  • Wunkai Lounge: Spend time in the top-floor lounge, connected to a terrace and Japanese Zen garden, with mountain views.
  • Library Lounge: Read, rest, and enjoy complimentary coffee in a quiet lounge space. Piano performances may be available on weekends.

  • Gym
  • Gallery Gift Shop: Browse souvenirs, practical items, and small gifts before you leave.
  • Meeting Rooms: Use meeting and multi-function spaces for small events, business gatherings, or private arrangementsul walks

Activities

You can keep your stay focused on the resort itself: soak in the baths, enjoy the grounds, read in the lounge, visit the art displays, or spend time over a slow meal. The property is designed for travelers who want time to pause rather than fill every hour.

The Mount Zao area also gives you access to nature throughout the year. Spring and summer bring fresh greenery, autumn brings strong color, and winter brings snow-covered scenery. You can also use the resort as a base for Togatta Onsen, Zao sightseeing, local craft stops, and seasonal mountain drives.

A shuttle service runs between JR Sendai Station and CHIKUSENSO with advance booking. The ride takes about 60 minutes, with a scheduled departure from JR Sendai Station at 1:30 PM and from CHIKUSENSO at 11:00 AM.

Additional Features

You benefit from attentive service that many travelers remember long after their stay ends. Transportation support, careful attention to comfort, and a calm atmosphere all contribute to an experience that feels refined without being formal.
