Overview
Yunushi Ichijoh invites you into the old soul of Kamasaki Onsen, a healing hot spring town in Shiroishi, Miyagi with more than 600 years of history. The story begins with spring water discovered by the tip of a sickle, and the town has long been known by the phrase “Kamasaki for wounds.” Today, you still feel that sense of healing in the quiet hills, wooden halls, and warm mineral baths.
Your stay feels like stepping into a forested time tunnel. The Taisho-era wooden main building was built without a single nail, using wood from the Ichijoh forest, and it now creates one of the ryokan’s most magical scenes when lit at night. You cross the “Bridge of Time” for meals, walk through polished corridors, and let the atmosphere carry you into a slower, more beautiful rhythm.
Accommodation
Your room gives you a graceful place to rest, with Japanese textures, soft natural tones, and views that keep you close to the feeling of Ichijoh’s forest. You can choose from 8 room types, including 4 suite styles and 4 standard styles. Each room has its own character, from open layouts with beds to tatami rooms with nostalgic warmth.
For a special stay, choose the Ichijoh Suite, a 100㎡ Japanese-Western room with a source-flowing open-air bath, king-size Simmons bed, and tatami corner. The Yunushi Suite offers a 73㎡ Japanese-Western layout with a semi-open-air bath and views toward the hot spring shrine and garden. Both suites let you enjoy hot spring water in private, wrapped in the quiet of the ryokan.
You can also choose semi-suite rooms, Japanese-Western rooms, rooms with horigotatsu seating, or larger Japanese-style rooms suited to families and groups. Some rooms have beds, some include tatami spaces, and some sit close to the dining room or hot spring baths, so you can choose the rhythm that suits your stay. All rooms are non-smoking, and free Wi-Fi is available inside the building.
Dining
Dinner is one of the great pleasures of Yunushi Ichijoh. You dine at Shoan, the private dining restaurant inside the wooden main building, where the mood feels like a little journey back to the Taisho era. Jazz music, private dining rooms, warm wood, and seasonal dishes turn the evening into something memorable before the first bite even arrives.
The signature meal is Mori-no-Bansan, or “Feast of the Forest,” a kaiseki-style dinner that blends Japanese and Western touches with local and seasonal flavors. The cuisine has received 3 Red Pavilion recognition in the Michelin Guide Miyagi, and the ryokan is especially known for the beauty and quality of its meals.
You can also add a more indulgent touch with upgrades such as suite-level kaiseki or the popular foie gras daikon, a playful dish that brings French richness together with delicate Japanese flavor. Breakfast is served in the same private dining setting, where morning light gives the old building a fresh, gentle glow.
Onsen and Wellness
Yunushi Ichijoh gives you two different hot spring experiences: Dokutsu-no-yu, known as the “hot spring of the cave,” and Yaku-to, the “medicated hot spring.” Dokutsu-no-yu is loved for its smooth feel on the skin, while Yaku-to carries the old “Kamasaki for wounds” reputation that made this hot spring town famous.
You can soak in large public baths with open-air bathing areas, surrounded by the quiet mood of the forest. The water is gentle enough for a longer soak, and the view changes with the seasons: green leaves, autumn color, winter stillness, and spring freshness.
Yaku-to is an indoor source-flowing bath with a long healing history. The spring is a sodium chloride sulfate spring and is associated with relief for nerve pain, muscle pain, joint pain, sensitivity to cold, chronic skin concerns, and post-surgery recovery. The public baths, open-air baths, and private family bath can be used 24 hours a day.
Guests with tattoos
The ryokan does not clearly publish a tattoo policy for the shared baths. If you have tattoos, the easiest option is to book a room with its own hot spring bath or reserve the family bath, which is available for a fee and limited to 2 groups per day. Please check with the ryokan before using the public baths.
